KDE4 loading incorrectly?

I'm now in KDE4, but I have no desktop icons except for a Desktop Toolbox which seems to be of no use, I have nothing on my main panel but a clock. (Can't add or take things off)

I have to run applications via alt+f2, and my windows dont even show up in my main panel after that.

I would provide a picture, but I can't remember the name of the snapshot program.

I'm pretty new to this, so sorry if I left out any information... if you need something just say so and I'll do what I can.

RE: KDE4 loading incorrectly?

Well, that happened to me before. I installed KDE4 Preview at OpenSUSE online repository. What I did to resovle this is to reinstall KDE4 using 1-click installer of YaST at KDE download page here.

Hopes this helps.

Desktop Effects not working under OpenSuse

David wonder if you can help me with my little problem. I too am running OpenSuse 10.3 and after reading your post I installed it from where you said. Installed okay, but I can't get the Desktop window effects to work.
If I go into Desktop then Desktoop Effects, all are greyed out and I get this feedback

Composting is not supported on your system.
Required X extension (XComposite and XDamage) are not available.

My Graphics card is the Nvidia Geforce 7300 LE and I have installed the latest driver (3D effects is enabled) and more puzzling is that I also have KDE4 installed running in Kubuntu and the desktop effects were there and working after I downloaded the KDE4 packages and are working fine.
So what if anything have i got missing or have not set up?

Can you help please? Or anyone?

Go into System Settings, then select 'Desktop' from the settings window in 'look and feel. You will then be in Desktop Effects where under my Kubuntu installation, all are ticked. Then you can click on the All Effects Tab to set different Effects for your windows on the desktop. (One of mine under Kubuntu is 'Fall Apart' which is quite funny, every time you close a window it breaks up into little pieces!

Hope this helps and can you post back please to let me know if yours is working in KDE4 in OpenSuse?

Thanks TG :)
