US keyboard + french + pinyin + simplified chinese

Hello,

I use KDE version 3.5.6-0.3.fc6 Fedora-Core on an IBM ThinkPad X40.

I have a US keyboard and I want to type text in english (ok that's the easy part) but also in french (with accents and cedilla), simplified chinese (by entering pinyin) and pinyin (i.e. I type pinyin with the tone diacritics and it is displayed as pinyin).

I want to type multilingual text in kopete, firefox, Xemacs and Gnus.

I have tried installing scim but it pops into action only in firefox. Also, I have not found any useable documentation or how-to for it.

Help?

Thanks,
Jean-Louis
