Steady on. Granted, I wouldn't use it as my primary desktop environment yet, but the apps work fine, no probs. All the normal KDE add-ons we are used to will come in time. Patience...

well , it looks like i am only one here who is not dissapointed in KDE4...it is completly new and it is supossed to be wierd at this stage...but it will get better and better in next couple releases... Who remember KDE 1.0 or 2.0 ? , well i do... it was also wierd at begining (first releases) , and it was defenitly wierd if you were moving from Windows (well ok if you have use it together with windows) , you shuld say in that time...what is KDE if you have windows...forget about it... And now with version 3.5 we have far better desktop than Windows users have (still not better looking if you look at Vista, but funcionality is far better )...With KDE4 we have got better look to...and in next releases we will get back some funcionality from 3.5 , but it takes time...(it took more than 5 years Microsoft to make Vista with couple of thousands programers(they made crap at end but thats not point)... so wee need patiance...

I am using KDE4 every day already and i am happy with it...i am waiting for KDE team to make it even better...

I have 3 Mac machines also and i just love OSX...it is simple ( and i dont need simple to be happy) , and simple is good...it is good for people who don't like ./configure , ./make , ./make install commands... And if we want Linux to became good competitor of Windows or OSX than we need to have simpliccity and beauty under hood.

If KDE4 is copy of something that is designed to be functional , to be simple and to look great then i am saying go KDE...

Everything is copy or clone so why not make it from something that is already great and tested by users and aprooved good...

Menu in KDE4 is not final... there are couple of them that are made already for next release of KDE4..1 ... google for " lancelot menu"... this one could be winner...who knows ;)

Best regards

Miki

Re: Lancelot menu - It's no better than the suse menu. As far as I'm concerned any menu that locks a user in a fixed size window forcing constant scrolling to find things is poorly designed and a total failure.

Kde4 . 0

Congrats for the devs to deliver a new KDE.

It runs and thats all there is to say. To many things not working , missing etc

So we wait for 4.2.

In the weeks to that take care off the following:

opensuse 10.3 kernel 2.6.22.13-0.3-default is running plasma and all the widgets on 1 cpu
and this system has 2 cpu's. the menu is running on the same cpu

On a system with 4 cpu's 2 are complete idle cpu 0 has a load of 90% kde4
cpu 1 has a load from 2 to 25 %

In kontrast kde3 on cpu0 and cpu 1 no more than 15% load

on the 4 cpu system all cpu round 5 to 10 %

both systems have 3 gig memmory swap file 20gb activated

All taken with Gkrellm and Ksysguard.

There are a couple of rough spots (they did make this clear to us over and over again so it's really no shock) but I'm VERY VERY VERY impressed! It's FAST, looks good, and appears to be headed towards the future. IE they are thinking ahead as they do things now.

Menu sucks... there's nothing else to say about it.. it's pretty and all but it makes a simple thing like navigating a menu and makes it work....

Other than that - Good show guys! Let's get 4.1 out ASAP.

RE: Agree

Additionally, a Dolphin weakness in front of Konqueror (3.5.x):
I cann't find in Dolphin such a menu as a "preview" for a sound (mp3) file.
In Konqueror I can search in a thumbnail view my mp3 folders so that if I move the cursor over the mp3 icon file I am able to hear the music WITHOUT OPEN ANY APPLICATION ! This is very helpfull.

Is or will be possible to do this in KDE 4 with Dolphin?

My first steps after installing KDE4 were to personalize the panels. In 3.5, I have two panels, one on the top with the menu and the applets, and one on the bottom, with the task manager and, an icon to show the desktop and the virtual desktops. I've been many years working with this configuration, and in kde4 I can do none of those things. I can't believe that it's impossible to move the panel, to add some applets, to add the button to show the desktop, change the size of the panels... Maybe I haven't seen it yet, but if I can do this, I won't use kde4 anymore until I can do it.
Kde4 still has a long long way to go before it gets really usable.

RE: KDE 4 or KDE alpha 0

I installed KDE 4.0 via opensuse and was horrified. What were these people thinking ?

Once they drop support for KDE 3.5, I'll move on to Gnome.

Greate work guys, fast and beautiful, go on! I'm waiting for 4.1 release, omitting some minor problems.
The menu is nice, I like it this way.

I'm Not Disappointed But. . . .

Here's my 2 cents.... I am not disappointed because I expected KDE4 to have a learning curve, and to break new ground and have some new features that are a little rough around the edges.

That being said there are a lot of things seem to have taken a step back. Like the obvious things including the Plasma based desktop and task manager.

A major problem for me is the devolution of the "File Dialogs" and the fish protocol seem to have been neutered (I posted about this in the KDE Network forum). Kate has digressed in a couple of areas (where are my line numbers?), editing remote files via sftp or fish is unstable at best. I actually lost data when a transfer stalled and kate crashed.

I know some of the changes (specifically Plasma) had to happen
in order to lay the groundwork for newer cooler features, and a lot of work was done to improve speed / memory usage.

So far i have mixed feelings. I have been genuinely trying to use KDE4 daily for the last couple of weeks. The file IO stuff has really had a major impact on my productivity. Kate has also really been a problem for me.

The bright spots like konsole, and kopete along with the improved speed basically make it a wash. I miss those things when going back to 3.5 and I miss kate and the awesome file io in kde4.

sorry for the good looks of kde4, its running VERY BAD on a raid 0 en 2 cpu's

novices

Hey Alex and others

After reading many forums regarding KDE4 it seem unanymous that people are just not happy with KDE 4 with regards to the rhetoric. I downloaded the KDE4 ISO and guess what, it dont work, so im not overly worried about that, i would gladly wait for the 4.1 version.

Now as for writing code, I would love too, but one problem, Im not overly good at it. Perhaps some tutorials for us beginners and novices would help us achieve more perhaps. What type of programming language do u use? I know a little about java, pascal, C, Visual basic, Cobol, and though it looks impressive, Im not that good at remembering it all, lol. But I love to learn all the same. Then perhaps some good code writing can come of it.

The other thing that bothers me, is, when I see the discover, develope, etc etc, I look at it and get all to confused with "got to do this and got to that" someone should put it more simply structured.

The idea of having a plasma look is great, but nothing new, my thoughts on most of the KDE 4 and other softwares, is that there is too much "Junk Code" thats irrelevant in all of this. Useless code for what I may ask? Do we need all that is packed into KDE4 and other softwares? Answer is no.

It should be "bare bones" with the option of adding anything the user wishes to have, that way developers wont have hassles writing core code and getting a base system or software out there and devotes more time to fixing any flaw or going onto developing addons. The user needs to define what he/she needs out of the software/system.

I decided to say this here and now as I have always pondered the thought of making my own OS, which is still on the cards, but I need to learn code languages more, firstly, and this is what I had come to when researching the idea.

I have high hopes for KDE 4 + considering there are many people around the world interested in it. So i think it would be good for people to contribute in anyway they can instead of griping at was is not, if you dont like something, make modifications and share it with other developers/users and make it a real community project..

I've rambled enough here, i could go on but I would bore you all to tears Im sure...

I hope you all enjoy the day/night

cheers

RE: Kde4 . 0

Problem Solved.

The high cpu load is caused bij BEAGLE

it is indexing the kde4 libs doc devel ect ect

So i deleted Beagle completely and now kde4 is running like kde3 as far as the cpu load is concerned.

RE: I'm Not Disappointed But. . . .

I like the overall look and feel concept of KDE 4 but I have a problem with panel configuration and virtual desktops. I use 16 virtual dekstops and have been unable to increase the number of desktops beyond four. I would like to see the old KDE 3 panel configuration and desktop configuration. I found KDE 3 to be far more configurable.

I am disappointed.

I hope that these configuration options are made available soo.

It's all about the configurability...

I have to jump in and, although disappointed is a bit of a strong word it's not ready and I am not extolling it's virtues right now.

It's the drop is user control between 3.x and 4 that seems to be my problem and not the environment itself, this appears to echo a lot of views. Giving back the user the control provided by previous releases will, I believe, lay rest to a most of the wave of negative comments.
The lack of config' options though is such a blow it's not even release candidate.

Provided the KDE team sort this out, and I am sure they will, KDE will be back on track and finally at Version 4.

... and I like the menu, it's great.

I have a few more ramblings here.

Cheers,
Mike

I have a question for you>> Why in high heavens would you be doing with 16 virtual desktops? I sounds to me that if its for business, then one can hardly be surprised about the feedback. But if it for personal use, then what for? why would you want 16 virtual desktops? Im just curious... and very interested. :)

The latest and the Greatest of KDE4 downloaded this morning

I do have a normal Menu its a widget you can install next to the vista like menu
del the vista like menu
and you are in inline with kde3

for fun you can put the vista like widget on the desktop
for startting kde3 progs

Broowser is Firefox
I use XMMS and xine with gui
for email i have gmail
for chatting i use Amsn
and Openoffice for letters etc
i put in the same jpg as background as in kde3
hacked the plasmarc so now the panel is the same size as kde3 wich is medium

and then on a 4 cpu system it is nearly half the speed of kde3

So why do i need kde4 it give me nothing new or useable.
desktop animation is so irretating imploding or exploding windows,
when jou start Yast Software management your desktop looks like a bombardment of WW2 on Dresden or so
The peases of the sreen fly everywhere

With a hole lot off changes to kwin and plasma kde4 is useable in my setting

Things I need back

It is beautiful, the widgets are cool and make me think of the first thought I had when I saw Mac OS "Why don't my superkaramba widgets show over the windows with a shortcut" . The effects are nice and they seem to run pretty well. I don't like the menu but I do like the search feature.

The static panel is a drag, I like one of the previous posts have two main panels. The two panels hide automatically, the top with shortcuts to frequent programs and menus and the bottom is standard.

I agree with others about the settings window. I understand they want to offer this interface but they (I hate to say this) take a page out of Microsoft's book and give the user the choice between an updated version of the old interface and the new one.

Not impressed with dolphin so far, I am quite fond of the sidebar meta information etc.

I also would like to be able to have more than four desktops I currently use six. Often used the following way:Quanta, Firefox, Virtualbox, Chat/Mysql Query Browser, UML, Kontact

I think kde4 will be great but they need to not forget what made them the better window manager in the first place. A consistent powerful interface.

I feel they are sacrificing function for beauty.

One of the things I don't understand is the major praise for the "new" widgets. They were called applets in kde 3.5.x. but they're widgets under kde 4.0. Big deal. The name changed. Get over it and stop patting them on the back.

I'll be impressed if they reach the point where kde 4 matches the functionality and configurability of kde 3.5. Until then, for me kde 4 will retain the title of "the great disappointment"

I agree with superstoned, with such a big project as KDE, you would have to release a 'stable' version, or you would be bound with updates over updates, and KDE would never be released! I'm sure that the developers would've never wanted 4.0 to be a perfectly stable shelf-ready release, it just came time for 4 to start maturing by inputs from the developers from the distros...
