the next KDE Menu

I think that the KDE Menu must change!

http://kdelook.org/content/show.php?content=3577

I think this is to big but a smaller would be great! At the moment I am writing a doc about the next KDE generation with ideas and concepts for the next KDE generations!

What do you think about the next KDE generations? Attention: KDE should ever be KDE and not other systems!

Hi,
I think the size is ok. Perhaps one should be able to configure the size (a new point in the new KWebControl?)
This menu is easier to use. Less menus and fresh looking.

I love that Menu, that's so cool. Maybe in the future, KDE will look like that :)

Cool !

Hi, thanks for pointing this out. As an home user (yes i do use linux mainly for desktop things and for the fun of it) the main menu is very useful and important. The look of this one is nice (maybe a little bit XP like) but what i would like to have in this kind of KDEs menu is the power to personalize it as I want it to be:
- create the main menus
- organize the submenus as i want them to be etc.
- maybe some plugins or modular extensions ?

by the way this idea is really cool.

Greetings
Darkghost

There have been a couple of updates.

I would like the ability for KDE to be FULLY customisable, which is a little difficult to do at the moment.

I think that the KDE Menu must change!

Well, IMHO i think that this kind of stuff would help KDE to be even better than Windows*
KDE went my desktop of choice under Linux, but with this kind of Features, i'm sure it would become my Desktop of choice at all (even over Windows).

It's time to get better than the others, not just try to look like them.
And the potential exists on KDE, more than on any other Desktop.

KMenu and KMenu2 (personalize)

I think that the KMenu2 should be like a script with functions like php include ;) to personalize it!

When you don't like KMenu2 you can use KMenu! I think KMenu2 should use the same concept!

I hope the forum can change to the other web hoster and then I will write a KMenu2 concept/my KMenu2 ideas and functions.

I think the basic idea is to have a container manu in which one could add plugins. This way we could have pretty much the look and feel that we want with the menu. Say I want the baisc menu, I remove all plugins but the one which mimics a basic but usable menu (like the today's Kmenu).

If we want more elaborate menu, we could add plugins for mail, calendar, whatever....

I was wondering reading this topic why Open Source desktop always mimic well known commercial ones. Why could nt innovation come from us instead of from the M$ or Apple ones ?

Just a thought....

i hope that these kicker modifications can bring about MORE intergration with personal information (kde-pim team). with that KDE will successfully be a tightly intergrated desktop environment. as well as bring more flexibility to the k desktop.

oh yeah, i like the slicker idea.....its a change from the ordinary. :)

Just to add to the other guys bitchin':

Kmenu could use a change! As long as we get a choice between the
old & the new one, any change is good. Actually I was hoping it would
be more or less done for KDE 3.1...

And it would be good if it could be done with standard widgets. So
that I didn't have to find a theme for the KWM, QT-style & Kicker. Three is a crowd!

I think the kmenu is generally good the way it is. That being said, it would be nice to add some functionality to it by allowing for appliets to be run inside of kmenu itself.

That being said. Skins are horrible... themeabillity is overrated and almost worthless from usability standpoint. The suggest change to kmenu makes it look/act more like XP style menu (which is visually attractive but functionally a step backwards... not to mention a usability nightmare!)

Anything that gets done to kmenu needs to be a system widw extention to the kde interface. Simply allowing the kmenu or kicker to be themeable will just hurt KDE's chances of being taken seriously as a desktop UI.

Example of what I mean:
http://slicker.sourceforge.net/info.php "kards" are an outstanding idea They operate system wide, add functionality, increase usability, and are consistent within the reast of the kde interface.

http://kdelook.org/content/show.php?content=3782 "themeable panel" is a HORRIBLE idea. It is specific to only the panel, reduces functionality, reduces usability, and is inconsistent with the rest of the KDE UI.

The strongest thing KDE has working for it ... is its consistency and its usability. To take away those two traits simply to add something that is "cool" would hurt kde more than it would help.

If you want a 100% themeable desktop try enlightenment.
Strid...

Well, I for one have gotten to like the XP menu. It probably could be even better, but it is much easier to click that one - and it will take you to every part of your system in a click. What I really dislike about the KMenu right now is the MostRecentlyUsedApplications at the top. It is a long way up there, and the icons at the default small size are hard to navigate.

But I agree on the themeability, to the extent that styles and themes should be applied in one place, the KDE control center. It would be pointless bloat to create something looking very different. And the Kards idea is too different looking in my book.

Like you said, consistency is one of the great things about KDE. The Kicker and KMenu should look better - but still use whatever QT widget style specified, not some light-gray freakshow like Kards does in the screenshots or the trippy "themeable panel".

I like the second screenshot. The first one is too XP looking and its usability is hurt. Also it has things in the menu that don't belong there at all, but in the system tray, not only that but they are more accessible from the system tray than from the menu.

The second screenshot I agree with because it is almost like the current kmenu but better organized, has larger icons and it comes complete with eyecandy without trying to add functionality that would serve better in the system tray and impairing the menu usability.
