Opinions on Kontact/Kroupware?

Hello, im new to the community and I think that people were waiting for a forum like this, general KDE forum to just chat etc. Anyway im wondering what you guys think of kontact (a groupware client) and Kroupware (server thing...?)

www.kontact.org
www.kroupware.org

Ive been waiting for an evolution like thing for KDE which blends nativly with konqueror and the look and feel of it. for those who dont know kontact is a groupware client that bundles address book, notes, email, and other features. the kroupware project (ive heard) is sponsored by the german gov.

First - I like kontcat ;-) It already looks very promising!

Second - the german gov. doesn't spondor kroupware. They ordered a solution, and pay for it. Kroupware is just a product (in open source).

kolab

the kolab software (server side and KDE client side) is looking very slick. this is one of those "must have" bits for KDE to really take off in the corporate desktop space.

KDE 3.1 is already Good Enough for most needs, but it will be things like Kolab, Kopete, Kontact and misc. functionality and usability enhancements in 3.2 along with the next release(s) of KOffice that will take it to new levels IMO. each new release of KDE is supplying new and exciting parts to the "Desktop puzzle", such as the Desktop Sharing in 3.1...

the next few years are going to be a fun ride!

totally agree, although kopete does have some issues with accounts and the Oscar protocol, but i can see Jabber being the weapon of choice for IM on the KDE desktop.

for the applications KDE needs i think the most necessary is a groupware client like evolution to handle mail and organize your news/weather which is quite helpful. (just one place to get ur info!)

Well - that's exactly what kontact (www.kontact.org) is for.

The version of kontact, that can be downloaded from this site is only a preview, done by one developer. The first real release of kontact will be with KDE 3.2. So we have to wait, wait, wait. (or use cvs, as I do ;-)

just for information ;)

Hi!

One answer to the question when there will be a new Kontact Release was posted on the KDE-PIM Mailinglist by Don Sanders the 8th of February.

Concerning the latest post i can say, that current CVS is everthing but stable... I had to switch back to final 3.1 because it wasn't usable anymore ;) (arts, kdelibs & kdepim)

Prego :)

--------------------------------
Great to hear you're enjoying Kontact!

There should be a release of Kontact 0.2 with an updated mail
component later this month or early next month. This will build
against the KDE 3.1 release.

Ideally the release will be made this month, but I would like the
Kontact releases to remain stable, and currently cvs is not as stable
as the 25 Dec Kontact release so if necessary the Kontact 0.2 release
will be delayed until next month.

The updated mail component for the 0.2 release should include
as-you-type spell checking and color quoting in the composer, several
IMAP bug fixes and maybe full text indexing (to speed up searching)
for non-imap folders.

There should also be a Kontact 0.3 in april/may and this will probably
concentrate on improving the IMAP support of the mail component.

The schedule for updates of the address book and calendar parts
depends on the maintainers of those parts and that requires further
discussion.

Don.

Kontact = KMail + ?

Hi,

is it true that kontact consists of kmail? If not, is there a new mail client created from scratch?

I would like to see my pretty good working kmail inside of kontact.

Have fun,
willi

Yes. Kontact consists of kmail+korganizer+kaddressbook+knotes. And as all this programs are used als kparts/plugins, there maybe knodes will be part of kontact too (and even more?).

I personally am waiting with much antisipation for the completion of this project. WIthin the next 6-8 months a decsion will have to be made in my organization of whither to install Exchange, OpenExchange, or kontact/kolab.. (Lotus Notes is SHIT!!) this decision all by itself will determin if Linux/KDE, Gnome/Evolution/Linux, or Windows/Outlook is on our desktop.

Things are looking great so far... now if 3.2 can just get here quick :D
Strid...

Kontact is a KDE 3.2 project. The currently released kontact 0.2 is just a preview made by one of the kontact developers. Do not expect too much support when using kontact 0.2
The real kontact will be released with KDE 3.2
