video card from hell

im having alot of problems with my ati radeon 9700 pro video card. i cant seem to get it working.

im using gentoo linux, i installed the ati-drivers and ran the config tool. i tried startx and i got a completly black screen. i could restart but it wouldnt display anything.

i added support for radeon in my kernel, that did nothing. i trued to edit the xconfig file myslef by switching from ati to radeon to the flglrx for the driver and nothing would work.

im completly confused here and i am new to this stuff, any advice?

thanks

I don't understand, does kde works, or not ?
If it looks ugly, you just have to configure it through the KControlCenter.

you seem to be limited to 8-bit colour, but perhaps i am blind :D

visit
http://www.xfree86.org/current/Status6.html#6

then go here to download the appropriate driver
http://mirror.ati.com/support/driver.html

they seem to have linux/xfree86 based drivers with openGL extensions for the ATI Radeon 9700, i think that is what u have

good luck

I thinks seb hits it spot on, but I think the solution might be as simple as adding:
defaultdepth 16
to your "screen" section in XF86Config e.g.:
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Card0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 16
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768/76Hz" "640x480"
Virtual 1024 768
EndSubSection

You may substitute the 16 with 24 for more colours.

Those lines look like a wallpaper, no?
(there used to be a wallpaper using those lines ;)

This can be easily changed by going to View->Background Image and selecting "None".
You can also use View->Background Colo(u)r to select a nice colour to fit in with your theme.

i also advise, that if you do want openGL extension support under linux, that you do what i have told you in my warlier post -- HOWEVER! take extreme caution, I know that i have blown my box several times just trying to install nvidia drivers, and they seem to have more linux support than ATI. But now, thanks to Nvidia, it is much better (ie i dont die nemore! lol) . Make sure u install openGL before doing anything else with your box, if that is what u want.
