Customizing konqueror and about alternative browsers

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the board and not a regular KDE user. I usually run gtk/gnome applications outside of a desktop environment.

I currently use neither KDE, neither Gnome. On one hand, I find the Gnome underlying architecture fragile and overly complex; applications are sometime too slow. On the other hand, I really like the KDE part approach (seems to speed up development and increase consistency) and the clever groundwork as well as some applications (kmail, kate, vim as a component, ...) but I'm usually turned off by konqueror and the lack of choice in KDE browsers.

In order to maximize my options, here are a few questions:

1/ Can I customize Konqueror menus to the point of a major simplification: removing many entries, in the main menus and in the contextual ones? Can it be sensitive to the konqueror mode (file manager vs internet browser)? I seem to remember reading that the menus were stored in xml files. Is it true. Can I modify those before or after compilation to get rid of unwanted entries?

2/ Are there gecko based kde/qt browsers? I don't really like Opera either. Can Mozilla or Firebird be made to follow QT colors and widgets. I usually compile Firebird for GTK2 but I think it also has a QT switch. How far does this go?

3/ Can I get larger image thumbnails? The largest thumbnail size in konqueror as well as in pixie or gwenview is quite small (at 1280 on a 17 LCD anyway). I can get much larger previews in gqview, rox or nautilus.

Thanks in advance,
P.

(1) This XML files are parsed at runtime, so you could try to remove actions from there.
They are usually stored in the applications data directory (KDEDIR/share/apps/appname/)

(2) There was a proof-of-concept implementation of a Gecko based HTML Render KPart for Konqueror, names KMozilla, but I think it is not maintained as people either use KHTML or use a Gecko based browser directly.

KDE should be able to apply color schemes to GTK apps as well.
See if you have checked the option to apply colors to non-KDE apps in Control Center->Look&Feel->Colors

(3) no idea, sorry

cheers,

1- KDE 3.2 will have a cleaner gui design.

3- they have been made smaller recently to avoid anoying flicker when rendering directories with lots of image files.
The bubble caption shows a larger thumbnail of the file.
Please file a bug report->wish to get larger thumb nails back into Konqueror.
