newbie has problems connecting to the internet

i'm new to linux and even struggeling around with connecting my laptop to the internet. it would be great if someone could help me out or point me towards further information that could help me. here is my problem ...

i have an internet connection via cable modem with a fixed ip. this modem is connected to a pc running win98. with my laptop i have to share this internet connection. if i'm using the laptop under win2000 it works fine for me. but i have no clue how to set up this connection under linux (suse 8.0 with kde 3.0). i tried to configure the network card (ip adress) of my laptop under linux the same way as i did it under win2000. but it doesn't work :( .

any ideas what i could do?

problem is network connection with a window$ machine

thanx for the quick reply ...

unfortunately the information on the suggested link didn't solve my problem. i don't want to connect my linux machine directly with the internet, but with a computer running win98 which is connected to the internet ...

my home network is really simple: 2 computers - 1 running win98 (which is connected to the internet) and 1 running win2000 or linux. under win2000 i have no problems to establish the network. but when i use the same settings under linux i can't get a running network connection.

the only thing i realized that is different between win2000 and linux is that under linux i should make a host-name and domain entry, but under win2000 i have the possibility to chose between the domain entry and an entry called "workgroup". i used the latter, the workgroup not a domain. might this be the source for my problem?

Set a static IP on your win98 machine. In Yast2 under Network/Basic go to routing configuration and reference this IP as the default gateway on your linux machine.

Make sure your DNS entries are correct in the Host/DNS section as well. The domain name may also be the key, make sure it is the same as you are using on the windows machines.

I only set up one Linux box on our network here and when doing the above it fired right up and I had no issues.

Good luck.

i followed all your instructions ... but unfortunately without success :( .

from the linux machine i can ping the windows machine. but i cannot ping an ip from the internet, although i use the ip of the win machine as gateway and the same dns entries.

concerning the domain i'm not sure. which domain do i have to use on the linux machine. as i operate in two networks (internet via cable and home) i have two. actually only one domain (internet via cable) and for the home network i'm using a workgroup under windows.

what shall i do :?:

If a ping using an IP address does not work, it means that there is a problem with the routing on the gateway.
