Import/Exporting

What amazes me about address books, is that after all these years, no one has set standards for exchanging address books between these applications.

Once again I'm facing typing in 250 addresses into another contact list. Importing and exporting is a joke.

Has anyone solved this problem? The first application that will import address books from Outlook Express, Outlook, Kaddressbook, Evolution, etc., et.al. will get my business for a lifetime!

Any suggestions out there?

Thanks for letting me vent my frustrations. Any suggestions appreciated.

You could just use the electronic business card format, vcf, which seems to be quite standard, and i have never had problems porting them between applications.

Where I've had problems is in moving from - say evolution to kaddressbook. I so seldom do this, that it is several hours before I get marginal results.

I've always hated to re-invent the wheel and so when I face things like this, my tolerance level is low. As I said, thanks for letting me vent.

You've really had good success with vcf? You are indeed, a smart fella. :mrgreen:

Unless Evolution uses a different format you should be able to use the same file for KAddressBook as well, as long as you don't have both applications running at the same time.

Don't know about OE but all others should also be capable to use a LDAP based addressbook which should enable real sharing, even across machines.

If all else fails, you can try exporting to a csv (comma separated values) or delimited text format and then importing that. If you need to tweak the fields to make the import work, you can try doing it in a spreadsheet (like Open Office Calc) or database program.
