Problems with Id3 tags in mp3 files

I used Lame to encode some mp3 files but was unable to get lame to put title and artist name in the ID3 tags. So after some googling I discovered a little GUI called EasyTag for editing the Id3 tags. It was on my suse8.2 cd's so I installed it, got it running easy enough, and I was able to enter the tag info. The mp3's with tags play in XMMS, and XMMS shows the title and artist I put in, as expected. So far so good.

But after burning the mp3's (with edited tags) to CD, this CD wont play in my portable CD/mp3 player. The player says "Disc Error". All I did was put in title, artist, year in the tags. What's strange is I had burned the mp3's without the tags to the CD before and they played fine on the portable player.

In EasyTag, the config window says it is writing both ID3v1.x and ID3v2 tags to the mp3 files. that doesn't mean much to me now, but it seems like a good thing.

Here's a summary, I used:
1) LAME to encode the mp3's - no problem (except for title and artist name)
2) EasyTag GUI to just edit the tags of these mp3's and put title & artist in - they play in XMMS (from my hard drive) and it shows artist & title
3) K3b to burn these mp3's with edited tags to CD - this CD causes a 'Disk error' on my portable mp3 player (however the player works if I play the same mp3's w/o edited tags)

Has anyone worked with the ID3 tags at all or have any ideas as to what is wrong?
Thanks for any tips or advice on this,
Kevin

try using a different application to add an id3 tag, such as mp3info
