kmail could not start new imap process

I guess I went too far in an upgrade :(

I'm using a debian based system and have been upgrading my kde. I am now getting an error in kmail on an account that was working for me before.

Could not start process for newimap.

I've listed many of my installed kde packages below. I have been getting them from the unstable debian tree.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Steve

Do you get the same error message if you enter the following url in the location bar: newimap://username@server/INBOX (where username and server should be replaced by your username and your server)?

Do you have an entry "newimap" in the kinfocenter->protocols list?

No, I don't have that in kinfocenter. Did you mean konqueror's location bar?

This error pops up in kmail, when I click on the one account that is an IMAP account. And I get that glass breaking sound. Haven't found where I turn off that sound either. My POP accounts work ok.

Thanks,
Steve

Yes, I ment the location bar in Konqueror. But if kinfocenter haven't newimap, you will proberly get a "could not find protocol newimap" error.

Do you have the file "newimap.protocol" or "newimap4.protocol"? You can try to find it with "locate" or find in manually in $KDEDIR/share/services. If you don't have that file, which files in $KDEDIR/share/services do you have with "imap" in it and ending with ".protocol"?

I can't find any newimap in my home directory area and locate returns:
> locate .protocol |grep imap
/usr/share/services/imap4.protocol
/usr/share/services/imaps.protocol

locate newimap does not return anything at all.

When kmail starts, the imap account is collapsed. The "+" is next to the folder. When I try to expand the folder, the error message pops up.

As far as I can see, you installed KDE 3.3, except kdepim which is of version 3.2. In KDE, there is a kioslave to handle all imap actions (including that of kmail). Version 3.3 of kdepim should be compatible with kde 3.2, but the imap kioslaves need a change. Therefor, the imap kioslave was copied to kdepim and renamed to newimap. Now, kmail can't find the newimap kioslave.

I think the newimap-kioslave should be in the kdepim-kio-plu package. Because it isn't in there, the newimap must be introduced in kde 3.3. KMail however does use the newimap-slave (it could be that libkdepim 3.3.0 is responsible for this).

To make a long story short: you can try to install kdepim 3.3; maybe an upgrade of kdepim-kio-plu to 3.3 will do.

You hit it right on the money. Thanks very much. Really appreciate the help.

I installed kdepim, using apt-get and got a bunch of other packages with it. Now it works.

IMHO, this may be the biggest problem with kde. Upgrading or installing. It is always a bear to upgrade. It appears some of the debian packages have some dependency problems.

Thanks again,
Steve
