KDE 3.1.93 upgrade from 3.1.4 on Suse 9.0

Okay, I'm probably a moron, but I'd like to do this right, or at least fix what I screwed up. This is so fundamental, I'm sorry if I insult your intelligence/level of expertise. I couldn't find another thread this basic.

I downloaded the 3.2rc1 files. Am I supposed to install over the current KDE (3.1.4)? I attempted that at first, but everything was conflicting. Then I placed the /opt/kde3 folder into the trash can (in Gnome) then attempted to install from a Terminal window. I think kde3libs installed, but everything else was conflicting.

At this point, I figured I was screwing up, so I deleted the new /opt/kde3 folder and attempted to put the old one back where I found it. I logged out of Gnome and I was kicked out of X all together. Fine, I attempted to install from the command line with X off, no joy, same conflicts.

At any rate, I can get into IceWM, but that's about it. I don't want to re-install Suse 9.0, since it's so darn heavy (takes me >2 hours), but I will if I have to. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

In general, it is a bad idea to install betas unless you are interested in being a part of the beta test process. This means you have the knowlege to troubleshoot, diagnose and report your findings etc etc. Since I'm as dumb as a stump for instance, I stick to RPM's and store purchased releases, with phone support.

Many times it is necessary to do a clean install of the beta. Can't say for sure here you'll have to RTFM, or STFW.

When I installed SuSe 9.0, it came with a way to fix the install by installing to CD in the drive, reboot, then select install. From there you can select repair the install. Shouldn't take 2 hrs.

These are actually RPMs that are "optimized" for Suse. It wasn't actually the beta, it was release candidate 1, which should be darn close to the final release, at least that's what I was hoping. I was kind of wanting to check out some of the changes to Quanta, hoping that it's getting better. I had successfully upgraded KDE once upon a time on a RH box, but it's been quite some time.
You're right about the Suse fix install, it may work. If I don't get any other suggestions, I'll give that a shot. Thanks.

Personally I have always upgraded and configured KDE using konstruct, up to recently I was using Suse 8.0 on my system and Suse 8.2 on the other they both had always run with the latest KDE available by installing it with konstruct. You can download it from à http://developer.kde.org/build/konstruct/ I will also try to find a message I posted in the past regarding upgrading KDE on Suse… hold on ……..

I try to only use the online update in yast. if it isnt in there then SuSE has not tested it yet. but SuSE usually stays pretty up to date.

I think SuSE as official RPMs of KDE 3.2rc1, you shoud try those if you didn't already.

About you system.
My advice is to install the kde3.2 with konstruct. It may take a while but you can place KDE 3.2 beta in you home without puting /opt/kde3 (Wow!) in the trash or doing any other system wide mutilation.

The only extra attention you need to have (probably one of the problems you encountered) is to remove the ~/.kde dir or set the KDEHOME env to something like ~/.kde3.2rc1.
If you don't do this it will try to use .kde as always (at least I think so) and have lots of problems because conf files are diffente or so.

Hmmm. According to the release schedule the RC1 of KDE 3.2
won't be out before January:

3.1.93 was beta one indeed, now there's beta2:

I found the beta1 on SuSE 8.2 to be very problematic.
I downgraded to 3.1.4 again. But I heard good things about
the packages for beta2 (read the comments on the article)
so maybe I'll give it a shot.

LOL! You're right. I don't know where I got the idea it was rc1 unless I was looking at the KOffice headline. Now I really feel like an idiot. In addition, the comments from 3.1.93 (which is what I attempted to install) indicated that there was actually major conflicts for some people (with Suse 8.2). I think I was completely asleep when I attempted to do this.

May I say, in defense, that I had hurt my back the day prior, and had been on drugs that day? Does it make me seem any less the complete an utter idiot? Probably not.

Hopefully, I can put everything back where they were as long as the links aren't broken (which they shouldn't be).

This week has been pretty bad, but at least I've gotten to know a few other WM's more intamitely. I think I'll wait until Sunday, new week, I should be off the painkillers, and perhaps I'll have some freaking sense by then. Sometimes it's a wonder I'm able to hold a job (currently as a technical instructor no less), pay the bills, and feed the family. Oh well, I swear next week will be better.
