file select and copy in Konqueror

I have a small problem with the Konqueror file select function. I am forced to use version 2.1.1 in KDE 2.1.1 because my main applications (x-ray astronomy software, eg ciao) require RH linux version 6 or 7.1. Later versions of RH are not fully tested with the applications. I am very happy with KDE nonetheless, and I use many features.

In Konqueror file manager, if I L-click a file it launches with the appropriate application. If I R-click a file while holding down the control key, I select it, and there is a menu that allows to copy it. When I paste it later, sometimes I paste unwanted files that I inadvertently selected, often the top file in the list of files, including one that may be out of view. Sometimes I copy a whole directory that was inadvertently selected in this way, which may cause havoc, and in general this characteristic has caused many errors.

Is there a safe way to select and copy only one file?

Drag&Drop the file
or
right click without pressing CTRL
or
Select the file by pressing left button in an empty area near the icon and draggin the selecttion rectangle across the icon to select it.

I had not fully appreciated these 3 methods. I often select multiple files in detailed list view, and I got into the bad habit of just using Ctl-R click.
thanks!
