kde4/Squeeze Desktop Issue

Hi y'all. First post on this forum.

I recently upgraded from Lenny to Squeeze via:
'Debian GNU/Linux 6.0.4 _Squeeze_ - Official i386 kde-CD Binary-1 20120128-12:53'.
AFAICT after hours/days of futzing, I think the installation failed to install some components that are important to me.

The KDE Desktop in what is now called the "Plasma Workspace" is empty;... 'tabla rasa', as it were. Directories & Icons such as Home, Trash, Computer, & etc. are missing.

Also, the menu list that was available via Right Click on kde3 is also different. It used to present options such as "Create New" "Copy here" "Move" 'Remove" & etc., among others. These are important to me.
Now Right Clicking on Desktop gives me:
Run Command
Add Widgets, Add Panel
Remove this Desktop Activity
Lock Widgets
Lock Screen
Leave
Desktop Activity Settings

I am just a home desktopper with scant savvy about what is going on behind the scenes and few skills for analyzing this kind of problem. E.g., I don't know if my installation CD only contained 'kde-standard' whereas I was expecting/needing kde-full. If so, how do I get kde-full? 'aptitude update => upgrade' on the CD listed many applications (took 6 minutes to list them) but would not complete the task. It kept requesting

when the disk was already in, and appeared to have been polled successfully for additional apps.

I don't really know what it means, but I seem to be missing a couple of files.

There is also the issue of frequent screen freezes that require hard shutdowns/restarts.

If the solution is to download a fresh 'kde4-full', I'm good with that, provided someone can walk-talk me through the drill. AFAICT it's not available via my 'sources list' repo; but again I'm over my head and unsure about my search results. I've come across material that refers to "meta packages" but that is just gibberish to me.

I would very much appreciate some guidance here.

r.
