Can you provide some more information? What is your kde version and which distro are you using?

When you click in the menu on Help, there is a point About KDE, there you get the version you are using.
To find out your distribution, open the Konsole, and there you type: cat /etc/issue
Then you get your distribution and your version number (as long as it is linux).

Are you using KDE Control Center (I think you are)? In that case there should be a button Administrator Mode at the bottom of the window. When you hit that button, you will be asked for the root password. After giving the root password, the fields won't be shaded out anymore.

Since you can access Konsole, just go to Konsole and enter: kcontrol
What comes up is the KDE Control Center. You were probably using it all along
Do you see any button/checkbox like "Administrator Mode"?

First this: in any KDE application, if you ever want to know what application you are using, or what version it is, find the Help option in your menu and select about. There are 2 abouts in your Help menu: 1 for KDE and 1 for the application.

Now, back to your question.

If it is indeed kcontrol (KDE Control Center) you are using, I have already told you how to become root.

If it is not kcontrol, shut down the application you have open, hit Alt+F2 and type kcontrol. After pressing Enter KDE Control Center will open.
