problem opening with kpdf

Hi, I am running Kubuntu 7.10 with the latest KDE 3 release.

I am having trouble getting kpdf to properly open pdf files by default. I think there is a misconfigured kpdf entry somewhere in the system which prevents the "real" kpdf from changing the file associations.

Here is the behavoir I observe:
-Double-clicking a pdf file in either Konqueror or on the desktop fails with the following message: "KDEInit could not launch '<file path>.pdf'." The mini pdf previewer in Konqueror (that replaces the file icon) works.

-Right-clicking a pdf file a selecting "Open with KPDF" gives the same error message as above. The icon next to the "Open with KPDF" option is blank.

-I can go into the "Open With..." option and select kpdf from the menu tree and kpdf will successfully open the pdf doc. Selecting to remember the application association will update the system configuration, but does not end up changing anything.

-I tried switch pdfs to another program temporarily and back to kpdf in the "Open With..." menu as above, but it doesn't help.

-I tried reinstalling the kpdf package, but this didn't help. I coulnd't remove the package without also removing kubuntu-desktop, so I didn't try.

-Looking at the file associations in the control center, I removed the pdf entry and made another, but this didn't help either.

If anyone can suggest something, I would greatly appriciate it!

Don't really know what to say to you, but maybe you should try installing "acroread" (Acrobat Reader package) if you can find it.

RE: problem opening with kpdf

Do a trial with this clue:

In KDE Configuration Center, go to "Files association" in "KDE Components" (this is a translation from french, I don't know the real syntax in the english version). Select "Files association".

In the right panel, click on "x-pdf". You should see "kpdf" in the "Incorporation" tab at the extrem right. If not, browse to kpdf an select it.

I hope this will be the solution to your problem.

RE: problem opening with kpdf

Try replacing the application/x-pdf file association with one for application/pdf. Seems to work for me.
