Hello,

i have copied some files with special characters from a DVD onto my kubuntu 7.04 linux. they look like this now:

04 la vie de r??ve (well the two question marks are little rectangles in my konqueror)

now i want to copy these files to an external disc, but konqueror gives me an error message

"Could not make folder /media/disk-1/Sound/Dub/Lab??."

Where ?? are again little rectangles.

I tried to change my locals, i also used the utf-8 migration tool, which didnt solve anything, still got the same problem.

has anybody an idea what i have to change that Konqueror can copy files with these little rectangles in the name? There are tons of these files as it is a mp3 collection and therefore manually changing all the folder and file names is not an option.

I found this thread concerning the same problem on another forum

however, there's still no solution. My external HD is formated Fat32, but I was not aware of a difference in Fat32 versions.

Anyway, windows is able to write these special characters to the HD.

My guess is that the encoding of the filename and folder name is not properly recognised by linux, and therefore it doesnt know what to write.

I found convmv to change the encoding of file names. What I didnt get is how I get to know the initial encoding of a given file name.
