BumpTop?

I am very excited about the many improvements in KDE4--the result will be stunning and a major step forward.

Still, I looked at the demo for the "physics enabled" BumpTop and was blown away by the usefulness of that system. See http://www.bumptop.com

That appears to me to be the first true change in desktop usefulness I have seen in years that constitutes a new method of working with files on a day-to-day basis. It would make most file managers much more rarely used, since working files could be directly manipulated on the desktop.

I would be interested in the comments of the Forum members on this, as it may be something that could be integrated into KDE in whole or in part at some point in the future.

i've seen demos of bumptop in youtube.
Graficly it looks very nice, but i don't see myself managing files in such a fashion.

to me it is mostly eye candy, without any improvement in managing files.
The idea is nice if you only have a few files on your system, but imagine managing thousends of photo's, documents, music files, etc. with such a system.

There are many times when we work with a particular project containing a relatively limited number of files--less than a hundred, certainly. For that sort of work, I think this would be a very convenient method.

Obviously, there are many other tasks for which it would be unsuitable--and for these, traditional file managers would remain.

I can envision a scenario (because I myself have done this) whereby someone might have an orderly file and folder system, but might not maintain it regularly. Many users tend to pile things up on their computer desktops as they would their physically desktops, and might only really sort, organize and file them on a periodic basis. BumpTop could help those people gather up those items lounging around on their desktops and sort and organize them in a way that they find more intuitive. I personally dislike the 'pile' method of filing, but there are many people who find it the only way to get and stay organized. For that reason, and the fact that BumpTop is a really novel twist on the computer desktop, I see a future for BumpTop. There's no reason it couldn't be an option for those who file in piles.
In retrospect, everything is funny.
