Opening multiple files over network

I am having an issue with opening multiple spreadsheets over the network (stored on a Windows2002 server). I first started having issues with OpenOffice where it would not upload any changes when more then one network spreadsheet was open. I first downgraded to another version of OpenOffice and then could not open multiple sheets at all from the network. Then I changed to another program (PlanMaker) and now cannot even open multiple files much less save work. When I have one sheet opened from a network drive and try to open another, I get:

unable to open file /var/tmp/kdecache-andyb/krun/test.xls

Now, I opened two different PDF files from the network and all is good. I would like to assume it is a limitation of PlanMaker, however locally it is not an issue. I am slightly new to Slackware (v11) and KDE 3.5.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

RE: Opening multiple files over network

Note that OOo and your PDF reader (KPDF assumed) open files differently. KPDF can load it virtually directly from the server, for OOo you need a temp file in /var/tmp/kde-user in order to view the file. I don't know a real solution for this problem, since I never had such usecase.

problem with openoffice is that kde uses a abstraction like smb://, and openoffice does not support that.

A workaround is to mount the windows share with smbmount and open the files at the usual way (e.g. /mnt/windows-share/directory/file.xls)
