Backup nightmare!

I know from reading this forum that kmail, kontacts etc are stored in $home/.kde/share/apps and $home/.kde/share/config but I am still getting problems because it seems there is more than one file to back up and copy.

I am experiencing two problems after having copied what I thought were the correct files:

1. I now can't save any changes to contact details, and
2. whilst I have the subject headings for all my old e-mail messages there is are no actual message and when I try and open the e-mail the subject heading drops back to 'no subject'.

I would appreciated some advice on what specific files to backup and copy to preserve all my old data.

Thanks

That's where configuration and application-specific data is stored, yes. But the actual mail messages are usually in ~/Mail (some distro's change that).

For (1), check permissions, check the read-only status of the resource that uses the files, etc. Worst case, add a new local file resource and copy everything over using the GUI. For (2), I suspect that you missed out on the actual Mail/ .

You may also get better help on the kdepim-users@kde.org mailing list, where there's a lot of helpful people.

Thanks for your observations.

I actually resolved the issue with contacts by importing from where I saved my backups. That worked well. The only other thing I had to do was to copy the ~/distlists file to reproduce some distribution lists I had created.

The e-mail has proved far more problematic and I am still working on that. I am hoping your comments will point me in the right direction.

On a general point, I have seen this issue raised on more than one occassion and there is no easily understood central point of information setting out all the different details. I've looked through everything from FAQ's to Google and this useful information has not been comprehesively documented at all as far as I can see.

I will follow up on the mailing list which I do subscribe to.

Thanks again.
