System Notifications & RealPlayer

I listen to the DeKalb county Fire/EMT calls on the internet with RealPlayer. I hear them in realtime. Since I turned on the System Notifications in KDE It seems that RealPlayer is not operating. Is there a way to use both or do I need to turn Systems Notificatin off? In Sound System Config I have the hardware set at ALSA. If I go to Auto Detect will this make a difference?
I am using KDE 3.5 and Kubuntu. Thank You

yeah, you now see what's still really wrong with linux - all the so-called 'soundservers' can't work at the same time. KDE uses arts, and if realplayer doesn't (eg output directly to the soundcard) you can only heare realplayer. you might try to get realplayer to output to arts. maybe you can set this in realplayer, and there is some commandline option from arts itself for that - something like "artsdsp realplayer" and it'll pipe the soundoutput through arts.
