I think the SBlive has even under the old OSS system two sound devices.

You could try to set one sound device for one sound application and one for the other.
For example setting /dev/dsp1 as the device for arts and leaving /dev/dsp0 for other applications.

Or you check if you can let both applications use ALSA directly instead of the OSS emulation ALSA provides.

Another option would be to use the arts backend in Amarok, but I think that one isn't as good as the others.

I must say, I have the same problem. However, AmaroK doesn't stop playing, the other sounds just refuse to be played, Kaffeine won't even play movies, my Thunderbird only works with the system beep, not my choosen sound.

Why can't KDE just by default, as windows or Gnome play multiple sounds? I'm a newbee to Linux and certainly to KDE (I tried it before switched back to Gnome and now want to take a look at it again). This sound is bugging me, I like multiple programs being able to play sound!

With the latest kernel versions (2.6.14+) and the latest alsa drivers (1.0.10+), you shall be able to run multiple sound sources. Configure all your apps that use sound to play it directly with alsa - ignore arts and such.

I use it that way on my gentoo system with the alsa drivers included in the kernel, works like a charm.

Hey great, I'm gonna try it right now! I have the newest Ubuntu, so I guess It will be ok........ gonna check the kernel and ALSA config now and set all to work!
