I'd like to throw my 2cents towards the idea of slimming down the choices of boards/sections that are available.

maybe increasing the font used in the menu would provide more spacing there by increasing the available area for icon size

control center > desktop > behavior in this window under the 'general' tab there is the option: [] Show icons on desktop
control center > kde components > file associations
while in konqueror, right click on a *.doc file and select 'open with' - in the window that appears there is a check box with the option to remember application that you enter in the field above.
control center > sound & multimedia > system notifications Quick controls: click the check box (apply to all applications) and then click turn off all.
