KDE ignores $LANG? / How to change localization temporarily?

Wow, thank you very much! That worked! So KDE really doesn't care about LANG... However, en_GB was just an example. I intended to set it to C and just assumed my KDE installation would be using english as its standard language. Well, I was apparently wrong, C didn't work. I installed the appropriate package as you suggested and now it works. cheers

KDE ignores $LANG? / How to change localization temporarily?

Hi, My system is running KDE3.5.5 on Debian SID. The desktop is german, but in order to give proper hints in web forums I'd like to start applications with english localization. And I am pretty sure that it was once possible to open konsole, set the LANG variable to e.g. en_GB and henceforth every application started from that shell were in english. (It's also in the FAQ!) But when I try it now on my system, LANG and LC_MESSAGES variables are apparently just ignored, no matter what I set them to...

How to detect default browser from a script?

I don't think there is a way to use DCOP to find out KDE's default browser. DCOP is for Inter-process communication, so I guess sycoca (KDE's system configuration cache) might be worth looking into. However, a workaround might be to simply grep it from the configuration file itself. It's set in BrowserApplication=... , in the file $HOME/.kde/share/config/kdeglobals Sadly there is no consistent, cross-distribution desktop-environment-independent way to find out the default browser. Debian, and pr...

Requesting Features - How to get attention from developers?

Hello! I am pretty new to the KDE community (or is it Kommunity? ) I noticed that at kde-look.org users often post mockups and suggestions about missing features or interface improvements... So lately, I thought why not work some of my own ideas out and post them? !!!shameless-plug-alert!!! http://kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=14992 (btw, the nick is different, but it's me nevertheless... ) However, since some pointed out they would be glad to see this-or-that in the next KDE rele...

[Debian SID] KDE Does not remember Window Positions

Hello! I'm pretty new to KDE but I really love most of it. However there is one glitch on my system that almost drives me nuts: Every window always appears in the upper left corner of the screen, no matter where it was when I closed it. Why? Well, I know I could use 'Advanced'->'Store Window Settings' for every application but since the workspace is also saved the windows often won't appear in sight the next time. I am using a bleeding-edge KDE 3.2 from deb http://rs.fuzz.nl/muesli/686/kde_head/...
