Could not find mime type

I am running Mepis upgraded to KDE 3.4.2 from Debian unstable. Whenever I open a kde application for the first time in a session I get an error message that says Could not find mime type application/octet-stream. I click on the ok button and the app starts. This happens for every KDE application. Is there a way I can fix this, it's highly annoying. Thanks.

Knotes and Kontact

I have found that Kontact works reliably for calendar, to do lists, and address book using the conduits provided by KPilot. I use Kontact exclusively and am quite happy with it except for the awfulness which is Knotes. The only reason to consider using Jpilot is if you must have notes and do not require a single address book. If you do not require note sycning functions (i.e. you take notes on the palm but do not sync them to the PC or do not use the notes function at all), then go with Kontact....

RE: Knotes and Kontact

I am afraid you are out of luck because, at least as of now, Knotes is horribly broken. Do not try and save important information in Knotes because, based on my expereince, you will probably experience data loss. Based on my research in the matter knotes will not sync with your palm. The best you can do for notes is to use the memo file conduit in Kpilot. This will save the notes on your palm to text files on your PC. However, I have found creating notes as text files and syncing them to the pal...

Kpilot sync problems

My setup is a little different, I'm running Mepis 3.3 (Debian) upgraded to KDE 3.4 and syncing with an old handspring visor. The sync works fine, but I find the connection to the handheld to be /dev/ttyUSB1, this may be a distro quirk. But I had no problem getting Kpilot to find my visor. The major quirk I note is that I can't get notes to syncronize using either the conduit to syncronize to Knotes (nothing happens) or the conduit to syncronize notes to files.

Knotes dead on Gentoo & Debian

Knotes is indeed extremely squirrley. I am running SimplyMEPIS 3.3 with KDE and KDE PIM upgraded to KDE 3.4 versions. Notes runs both under Kontact and on the desktop. However, opening notes on the desktop causes all notes created from the Kontact interface to disappear and vice versa. Also it appears to be impossible to sync notes with my palm. What gives? This has been bad for a long time. Thoughts on workarounds or fixes appreciated.

Knotes Usage

My bad for thinking that a forum called KDE-Forum in the section for KOffice and Pim questions was a good place to ask about Knotes. I run kde on a laptop and start and restart it all the time. Knotes could be much more useful if it were searchable and not as flakey.

KDE rpms for x86_64

I'm running CentOS 3.4 (RHEL) for x86_64 and want to upgrade KDE from 3.1 to 3.3. The KDE-Redhat project has some great rpms in a YUM and APT repository that would work just fine for me if they were x86_64 instead of i386. I can't find any x86_64 rpms anywhere. Does anyone know the location of any such rpms, be they on KDE-Redhat or elsewhere? Thanks.

Knotes Usage

Thanks very much for the reply, your tip was most helpful. You'd think that behavior would be something the designers would let you configure from the interface.

Knotes Usage

I'd like to have Knotes running in my tray and have it open on startup. I can't figure out how to have knotes start without opening a new note. This is generally a nice feature but is there a way to disable it. Can I make Knotes open without opening a new note?

I want Konqi to vanish from the logoutwindow

Don't think so, but not sure the problem can be solved by any other than the KDE development team. They need to kill konqi or they need to provide a dialog that allows users to select a logout picture or the possibility of having no logout picture. Death to Konqi.

I want Konqi to vanish from the logoutwindow

I just make a 1 pixel transparent png and name it shutdownkonq. That leaves the frame though.

System Notification Sounds

I confirmed that it is pointed to /opt/kde3/share/sounds. I can play all the sound files in that folder on JuK, but they won't play as system sounds.

Change Kontact Icons

Perhaps this is not exactly the answer to the question you are asking, but the Icons in Kontact follow the Icon theme you are using for all of KDE. If you change the Icon theme you are using , the icons will change. You could also modify the Icon theme.

Delayed Thanks

Thanks for the info. I was confused because all the bookmarks were in a single folder that was marked as the toolbar folder.

Konqueror Bookmarks

Is there a way to get only a subset of my Konqueror bookmarks to appear in the bookmark toolbar? Is there a way to import Mozilla bookmarks to Konqueror?

Fonts

Putting fonts in ~/.fonts works for me in Fedora Core 1 with KDE 3.2. There used to be an application called kappfinder that was part of KDE Base. I can't find it under KDE 3.2

Kontact Problem

I installed KDE3.2 on my Fedora Core 1 system yesterday and have been using Kontact which I like a lot. However I note that times displayed on the summary page for entries in Kalendar are off by -6hrs. The entries in Kalendar are all correct. My KDE clock is correct and updated from a server, my system time is synced to the KDE clock. I note that my time zone is GMT -6 and believe that has something to do with the problem. Why would this happen? Any thoughts appreciated.
