I dont think that is his problem to be honest. I have the same problem, and the problem is not with that cable. CD audio works for me under windows xp and red hat 8, but not under Mandrake 9.1

I have the same problem. Its not with aumix., I am already aware of that. I have full sytem sounds through speakers, however, audio cd's play but no sound output. If i plug speakers into the speaker jack on front of cd drive, I get sound. I know this kind of solves the problem, but I need a second set of speakers, and it takes the fun out of finding the problem!
