KDE Desktop Configuartion Messed up for root

well, using kde as root is not a good idea, so i think it is a legitimate question. by running kde as root you are creating a security hazard for yourself and others.

Help me: Install KDE 3.5.7 OK, but it's not running correctly

Well, there is something wrong with the mime type settings and the xdg menu settings, wich results in an empty kmenu, kcontrol and kde not knowing how to open .desktop files.

Maintenance --> Software-Update

Quoted I have never used the forum before. The best way to work with a forum is to split up your questions into different topics and post them in the appropiate sub forums. That keeps the thread about your questions readable and guarantees more/better answers Regards, Rinse

Kmail links open cache (file://) instead of URI

You should tell kde that firefox can open url's by itself. You can do that by adding %u to the firefox command in kmenu.

KDE-3D, can it happen?

as long as the screen is 2D, i don't see any point in 3D desktops. Did you look at SUN Looking Glass? That project aims to create a 3D desktop.

No idea how to add an item to the menu.

you can edit your menu with the application kmenuedit. Look for it in kmenu, or start it from a terminal.

Kicker icon zooming--where'd it go?

the feature has been removed in kde 3.4. in kde4, kicker will be removed as wel, being replaced by plasma. plasma should give you more flexible configuration options, so if someone is interested in icon zooming, he/she could write a plasma plugin for it.

all system icons missing after fsck

try to create a test user and check if that one has the same problem or not. If it doesn't, you could try to cleanout the configuration files in your home directory, starting with ~/.local and ~/.kde

Kecko???

it is possible, we just need to port gecko to Qt. This is done several times, but only as proof of concept, not as long term solution. One of the reasons for that is that kde needs cooperation of the mozilla project to create a fully functional and maintainable qt-version of gecko. And for some reason, that cooperation didn't come...

[Kontect] Sync with Microsoft Exchange

Quoted Originally posted by daihard Do you happen to know the reasoning behind the removal? It took too much resources to implement the proprietary exchange protcol into kmail. So the exchange plugin was buggy, badly maintained and not 100% functional. Since that situation wasn't going to chance in the near future, they removed the buggy plugin leaving kmail without exchange support.

RE: Konqueror and playing multimedia off the web

Quoted Why is it that a plugin/embedded player that works in Firefox does not work in Konqueror. Dunno, works fine over here. Perhaps it depends om the website you are visiting. Quoted Secondly, in konqueror itself, how do I configure playing of streaming media. I mean I know of Settings --> Configure Konqueror --> File Associations and have tried endlessly to install every player and tell konqueror about it but nothing seems to work. Is there a tutorial that can help me with this? I think you ...

Konqueror as web browser

Quoted Originally posted by smithxi that seemed to speed it up, how can I launch this command every time? you can put it in a configuration file that gets loaded everytime you login. I think ~/.bashrc is a good place, or /etc/profile. You can also put it in the startkde script. But that is only an option for experienced users (if you mess up the startkde script, kde will not launch anymore)

Konqueror as web browser

you can, and then start konqueror in that same terminal to see if it works. If it does, you need to make sure linux executes that command at every boot.
