Kicker and kmenuedit crash. How to manually edit menu?

Check and delete any menu files in ~/.config/menus. These are changes you have previously made with kmenuedit to one user's menu only. Menus themselves are in /etc/xdg/menus/ and can be edited with kate, are similar in style to html, but these are the universal ones, so if they work for other users I doubt they will help. Another option is to run "kbuildsycoca --noicremental" in a console (without the"" which rebuilds the system configuration cache. Jim

Navigating KMail

Surprised at the 'unstable' bit - granted I use pop3 but Kmail has never wobbled in 30 months. Always used preview because most of my mail is threaded and there are all the keybd shortcuts ie p/n for previous/next; +/- for next/previous unread mail; shift+del to get rid of unwanted single item, or if thread is closed it deletes the whole thread. Not much help but just a thought Jim

KMail & Anti Spam Wizard

Kmail does not have an anti-spam wizard, only an option to 'mark as spam' but I dont think it does anything beyond that. If you have a lot of mail+spam then best is probably to install spamassassin. If your isp allows multiple mailboxes use several but be very specific in who you pass details to so that most spam goes to one box. If you dont get much mail each day I would suggest using Korn. It can be set to check mail at intervals, you can read the headers and delete any spam before you actuall...

Whose bright idea??..

Using SuSE9.0 and KDE3.2 with SBLive - no problems with sound at all. Control Centre - sound system enabled, auto-suspend (arts) after 15 secs. Hardware - full duplex enabled. You will also need to use Kmix (Multimedia/Volume Control). Right click icon and show mixer window. Select soundcard (ie mine comes up with the onboard card and SB) - input/cd level set to max with mute off, then set output/master vol to whatever, which should then play a cd using Kscd or Xmms. In a console type "artsshell...

SBLive! in KDE...

Yes SB is compatible with arts but arts can be a nuisance eg it gets in the way of things like using Audacity to record audio files. Best is to set arts to suspend itself if inactive, but in KDE314/SuSE9 it would not - dont know why, so I disabled it from the Control centre. Type 'artsshell status' (without ' ) in a console. If nothing is running it should say 'suspended'. I always use Kamix for controlling when I use XMMS or Kscd - in fact, most of their controls seem to be inactive. You will c...

problems with kmenuedit

Cant be certain cos dont use RH9 and RH is not KDE friendly, or so I believe. Current KDE is 3.1.4 and the menu is based on new version of FreeDesktop which is due in K3.2 - prgs get put in specific places rather than where you fancy. In a console, entering kbuildsycoca --noincremental should reset K menu and clear out anything it doesnt like - or it does on my SuSE9.

Menu editor and menu config files

Menu in SuSE 9.0 is based on KDE3.2, it's all changed from old ones. Progs are added to it in specific locations rather than by choice. To clear things out, use File Manager/Show Hidden files. If there's anything in directories .config/menus/ or .local/share/ then delete them. Then in console run "kbuildsycoca --noincremental" which will reset menu to default. Might be worth logging out/in to restart everything. (It reBUILDs SYstem COnfig CAche) - have a look at man page or kbuildsycoca --help i...

No sound for audio cd

If you're using XMMS, select Options/Preferences, then audio plugins. I use ALSA, then use configure to check that the correct soundcard is being used, then hopefully things may sound better.

Apt-get with SuSE

Just used apt-get on SuSE 9.0 to upgrade all KDE etc. No problems found, and you can search for far more detailed info than Yast gives. I used the //linux01.gwdg.de/apt4rpm site. There is a link from there (forget the web address), the link is near the top of the page. It's long, but a detailed and good how-to. Jim

KOffice-1.2.1-14

Using SuSE 8.0/KDE3.0.5 Just upgraded KOffice to 1.2.1 but now nothing works. Running koshell/kspread etc from console I get relocation error: /opt/kde/lib/libkofficecore.so.2: undefined symbol static_QUType_varptr. Upgraded libart_lgpl to 2.3.10-92 but that hasnt helped. Bit of a newbie so any help/instructions would be much appreciated. Thanks Jim

Connecting to ISPs

Not sure if it's relevant but have you set-up the Mail options in Yast. I did initially and it seemed to cause problems so I deleted all data leaving just that in Kmail itself. Kppp was in my SuSE 8.0 but disappeared after an online update - or rather it's still there but out of action. Jim

Dial-up connection settings

Oops - what I meant was downloading in either Konq or doing a Yast update I get lousy transfer rates. Someone suggested setting up a file /etc/ppp/ip-up.local and setting the mtu inside that which I may yet try. Jim

Dial-up connection settings

Konqueror download speed is rarely better than 300bytes/sec so doing a big Yast update can take hours!!! Using Win98 I normally expect (and get) at least 2.5kb/sec or better. I changed mtu/mru settings in the ppp/options to 276, which I believe to be appropriate for dial-up but when I connect it gets overwritten and reset to 1500. Any ideas that would improve download speed would be much appreciated Thanks Jim MacLeod Using SuSE 8.0/KDE 3.0
