KDE 3.2 via Konstruct on Redhat 9

Redhat has some very specific patches they apply to make KDE work with their freetype2 setups, custom library configurations, and such. Because of this any source build of KDE is usually buggy and ugly. The best way to do an install of KDE 3.2 on fedora is to check out http://www.kde-forum.org/viewtopic.php?t=2037 that article and either do an apt, yum, or ftp install. All of the packages for those installs where built with modified Redhat SPEC files so the appropriate patches where applied.

KDE 3.2 via APT

For those of you who would like to install KDE 3.2 on fedora core 1 there is an article by fedoranews.org on doing it. Its fairly striaght-forward and includes a link to an ftp repository of the necessary rpms. After downloading the rpms the install is as simple as rpm -Fvh * They also include a tutorial on getting KDE 3.2 installed with yum (the apt like application used by up2date.)

How often do you visit kde-forum.org?

I keep and eye on the Redhat/Fedora forum so I would guess about 3-4 times a week. What I am really looking forward too is increased content in the forum. Sometimes it can go a couple days without many new posts.

KDE Mail,etc vs Evolution

I have used Kmail consistently for the last couple years based entirely on its stability over Evolution. In evolution something is always going wrong. Kmail may be short some features but it always just works. But I am really excited about Kontact!!!

KDE 3.2 via APT

You are looking for http://kde-redhat.sourceforge.net/. Its the kde on redhat project. Check in unstable... stable is generally reserved for the current stable KDE. You will find the sources.list entries on their website.

New Fedora Core 1 apt repository

PS.. If anyone has a KDE app that they would like to see in the rockerssoft apt repository please post it here. I am pretty good at getting them out there and if you want the application, more than likely someone else does too.

New Fedora Core 1 apt repository

For anyone who is interested I have a new fedora core 1 repository up and running with 100% compatibility for freshrpms. The lines to add to your /etc/apt/sources.list are: rpm http://www.rockerssoft.com apt/fedora/1/en/i386 rockerssoft rpm-src http://www.rockerssoft.com apt/fedora/1/en/i386 rockerssoft The repository currently provides about 25 applications (got another 10 or so on the way) almost all of which are KDE apps. One application of particular importants is a FIXED kdemultimedia... th...

kdeinit won't start

In Redhat 8 & 9 libqt-mt.so.3 must be in your /usr/lib/qt-3.X.X/lib directory or found in your QTDIR environmental variable (or maybe your LD_LIBRARY_PATH I am not sure which) you can check it out by doing this: export QTDIR=~/path/to/your/libqt-mt/dirctory and then trying to start kdeinit. You may want to put this in your /etc/profile to make it permanent.

This does not sound good for RedHat ......redhat no more?

True, Coporate RedHat will be no more but I am finding it hard to feel too bad about it, especially from a KDE standpoint. For years now Redhat has either shipped an obsolete version of KDE or a busted version of KDE (i.e. disabled features that Gnome did not have, introduced buggy code, disabled entire programs, etc..) I am hoping that Fedora (under the pressure of community development) will work to fix these short-comings. It will all depend on how much "editorial" control Redhat decides to m...

This does not sound good for RedHat ......redhat no more?

Go check out the Fedora Project. Redhat handed over control of the community release to the http://fedora.redhat.com/ project (well they still maintain editoral jurisdiction.) Now redhat linux will be a community supported OS maintained by the fedora project.

It sounds like you have a kdeinit race condition but I have no idea how you could have gotten it. Did you install any third party apps?

Apt repositories for Redhat

Figured a good way to start off this forum would be with some useful information. Here are some really useful apt repositories specifically for redhat and KDE. (i.e. apt4rpm) http://fedora.mplug.org/ ftp://orca.st.usm.edu/pub/apt/redhat/ http://rockerssoft.com/apt/redhat/ http://kde-redhat.sourceforge.net/ All of the above have at least some KDE applications (outside of the ones directly distributed by Redhat.) I love apt and all the great work that freshrpms has put in but there has been a dist...

[CLOSED - NEW THREAD COMING] So what's your Distro and Why?

Redhat 8/9 with apt-4-rpm... the best of all worlds. Now if they would just stop fscking with the standard KDE package, all would be good.

re-mounting every time I load?

Ya, if you are using smb (i.e. samba) to connect to a windows share then you will want to add something like this to end of your /etc/fstab (just creat a single new line with this command on it.) //192.168.1.1/shareddirectory /mnt/mountpoint smb username=yourusername, password=yourpassword 0 0 If you know your mount command it should not be very hard to figure the format in fstab. There is more information in "man fstab".

KDE and the OSX menu bar

Before we start let me say that I am glad that ppl are choosing to use KDE and get the opportunity to configure KDE to do whatever they wish, but... Is anyone else sick and tired of the OSX menu bar? Anyone tired of the "dude I love that transparent OSX bar thing that resizes after you go over the icons... KDE 3.2 need to have that." moronic junior-high filth that spouts forth from those with 0 understanding of system usability. There is lots of work going to-wards getting a similarly functionin...

3d virtual desktop change

Quoted Original von Stevey_Hudz Hi, This should do what you are looking for: http://desk3d.sourceforge.net/ OMG that is sexy! Functionally its a little less useful than the standard Pager but DAMN is it sexy! I could not help myself so if anyone is interested I have built rpms for 3ddesktop for Redhat 8 (if you don't use redhat 8 try downloading the src.rpm and working with it.) You can get the rpm here or get the src.rpm here for those of you that use apt4rpm on Redhat 8 you can add: rpm http:...
