Quoted Original von tuxnet Hi MaXeR, I've noticed that you have not tried Suse Linux yet, well I recommend trying Suse Linux 8.2, I promises you will not be sorry and you my even change your mind about your favourite Distro. i was looking at suse since i have plenty of space left, however the problem is installation. atm im very strapped for any cash (still running a 1.2ghz athlon thunderbird) so i cant purchase it, and i was trying to follow the directions on suse's site but it keeps saying it...
welcome to debian first, since your using woody i dont think you'll find the latest KDE packages in the official debian repository. instead you'll need to follow the directions from the source, the kde website. add this to your /etc/apt/sources.list deb http://download.kde.org/stable/3.1.2/Debian stable main then do the command: apt-get update then apt-get install kdebase, and the other kde packages. packages list is found here: http://kde.org/documentation/faq/install.html#id2907952 have fun!
Quoted Original von coolclassic Every time I attempt to print a web page KDE crashes with a signel 11 error. Is my setup wrong or is this a bug. I am using Suse8.2 it happened to me also a couple times with debian, however it no longer does it for me for some weird reason. when i tried to print from a document (like a kword thing) it worked fine so try to print from a non-konq thing and see if it works. it could be a prob with konqueror and you could submit a bug report. if printing from kword ...
what kind of a network do you have? most distrobutions will automatically detect and configure your ethernet card, and more so theres increasing support for wireless devices.
you need some specific libraries, something like mpg123 or mpg321. the latter is a free software alternative i think. im not sure but i think these support video, otherwise they'd just do mp3 audio. if im wrong please somebody correct me.
you should get that theme when you install kde3.1 by default. but the window decoration is called "keramik" and the theme/style is also called "keramik". the icon theme is the world famous 'crystal' by everaldo.
okay, you'll need to install something called usbmgr (its what i use for my usb mouse) and usbview (handy app to view usb devices) in your kernel you will have to add the kernel module to support USB and USB printer/scanner devices. so if you know the RH equivilent to debians 'modconf' then you should be set. (i think you need to find the rpm modutils) or you can try insmod (module name) when you know what the module is called. im not sure but if anybody else can fill me in what is the directory...
personally i think they need an embedded movie viewer in KDE, something like kMplayer and the like. oh yeah, whats the deal with kaboodle? is it a media player or just something to take up space?
i would use kMplayer but theres no debian packages out there for it, so im pondering to make my first debian package with this application. kplayer is okay however it doesn't intergrate with the rest of KDE, so you cant view your movies embedded. (unless you use moz with the mozilla-mplayer plugin) however, what about 'kaboodle' ? i wish the developers would create something multimedia application thats worth while, whilst noatun/kaboodle are okay they dont use the hacked dll's that i got for mp...
okay, what distrobution are you using and what usb related packages are installed?
okay, maybe redhat claims they support it but the soundblaster series of sound products are well known and definetly supported in the linux world. i think you'll be better off by using your soundblaster for now because it will save you going about finding the right info to configure your sound chip. when you log into root do u get the same problem?
so do you have a soundblaster card? is it the Live or PCI512 series? if so use the kernel module EMU10K1 (it should come with ur distro) insmod EMU10K1 or something. however, its also a question of permissions, whenever i do a fresh install of debian i get that same thing in KDE, id try these steps, they worked for me. you'll probably need to find your mixer device, which is probably /dev/sound/mixer or /dev/mixer, then make a symbolic link. (ln -s originalfile newfile) once thats made make sure...
you gotta find the rpm/source or whatever of a simple application called 'eject'. thats what KDE is looking for by default to use. http://rpms.mandrakeclub.com/rpms/eject.html is what a quick search on google found.
what packages regarding network sharing are installed, you'll need these if not more: smbfs smbclient samba samba-doc (always helps) linneighborhood is a good program to view your network shares. in konqueror smb://computername SHOULD work. i dont use Lisa because i consider it a waste of resources.
click and run is pretty much a front end to apt. a very nice QT front end to apt. if only they released that code or something, id be a very happy debian user.
i hear that there may be a WYSIWYG type add on or something to Quanta in the near future, Quanta Plus is scheduled to become a standard KDE app in 3.2. (it will ship with KDE 3.2) however i also agree, something like composer at least should come for KDE. then we can work on mimicing dreamweaver mx. although i hear a linux port is under way by macromedia.
hey guys, im wondering what would my AMD Thunderbird 1.2 ghz be classed as? the AMD K7 processor? reason being i need to know for my kernel image in debian. thx
do you mean kget or something? by default the dialog box goes to /home/*yourusername* so i'd suggest going there.
what distro are you using, theres been many unofficial debs and (i think) rpm's for his work.
as long as you have samba(-client) (you might need the konqueror plugins too) and its libraries on your box you will be able to surf your network, i find LISA a waste of resources sometimes and a security hazard waiting to happen, instead try linneighborhood to view your network computers.
