pdftotext is your friend. It's part of xpdf at least in gentoo.

AFAIK It can't but it's a planned feature in kde 3.2. See: http://developer.kde.org/development-versions/kde-3.2-features.html third line "KDE Password Registry and Wallet..."

You need to install kdenetwork-3.1 and AFAIK it requires other kde-3.1 packages too so the easiest solution is to update your whole kde system.

You can set auto idle for artsd shorter. Choose control center/sound & multimedia/sound system. Other option is to use killall -9 artsd before starting quake or start quake via artsdsp -m quake.
