kontact ain't kontactin'

Have you run all the updates for your distro? Maybe there's a problem with a broken dependency. You don't mention, but when does it happen? When you launch the app, or, say, when you try to retrieve mail? Also, the command line output points to KDE Core, so I'm not surprised that removing and reinstalling Kontact did nothing. You might have to reinstall KDE itself.

Kontakt - KMail - mark message as todo

As far as I know, there's no way to make a message that you've marked To Do show up in your task list. However, you can drag a message over to the To Do icon, and it will create a new To Do item which you can then modify to suit your needs.

Korginizer - start day of week

Sure, it's easy. Just run System Settings, then click Regional & Language. Make sure the Country/Region & Language icon is selected in the left hand pane, then click the Time & Dates tab. There's a drop down called First Day of the Week. Click it, and select Sunday.

War against spam

Kubuntu for me

While I agree that most distros look the same, installation tools, package management and community support will drive a person to one or the other. For me, Kubuntu is the stuff. I started out in 2002 with Suse, and loved how different it was from Microsoft Windows. However, I had some quibbles with their implementation of KDE, and when Novell was threatening to buy it, I jumped ship and landed on Gentoo. Used it for a couple of years, learned a LOT about Linux under the hood, but got discourage...

RE: Kontact Data Locations

I believe it's all located in ~/.kde. If you back up your entire home directory (~/), then you can be sure you won't miss any data.

Feisty Adept problem - [Solved]

Since I was able to figure this one out on my own, I guess my new status of Leading Software Engineer is warranted. For anyone else experiencing this problem, and it seems to be rather wide-spread, just run this command: sudo dpkg --configure -a I pulled the info from the following article: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+so…/+question/5301

Feisty Adept problem - [Solved]

No one, eh? If a screen shot would help, here it is. Maybe someone could tell me where the database is that I can check its permissions or something. I feel like I'm really stuck here if I can't update my system. Thanks in advance.

Left handed mouse control

That might be the wrong name, actually. If you have XFree86, I think the name is different. Either way, I'd stick with Rinse's advice. The plain old X interface is a good generic environment to test with.

Feisty Adept problem - [Solved]

Hey, all. I just upgraded to to Feisty last night, and when I rebooted everything looked great! But adept claims the database is in use by another program. I rebooted a couple of times to clear out any mysterious programs that I might not recognize needing the use of the adept data file, but it didn't help. I can't even manage repositories. Anyone else have a problem like this after the upgrade?

RE: mouse problems

You have a 9-button mouse? Maybe the mouse that's configured in x.conf is the wrong one, so it won't recognize the changes you make. Just a thought.

Linux Anti Virus

I don't bother with antivirus software. One of the reasons I'm using Linux is because it's reasonably impervious to viruses, and totally impervious to spyware. And I don't use Word or Excel-format files, either. I have OpenOffice at work on my Windows box and at home on my Linux machine, all so that I don't have to worry about Microsoft Office macro viruses.

taskbar icons

Nope, I'm afraid I was wrong. The only thing you can do that to is the KMenu. The Kicker has to have the text. You can, however, turn off the icons. But the text is there to stay, I'm afraid.

I'm a nub, no joke.

1. When you're asked for your sudo password, in Ubuntu/Kubuntu that means just enter your regular password. It's akin to Yahoo! Mail asking for your password again when you want to change some of your account settings. 2. I've been struggling with Windows Media files for far too long. My best guess is that video files created with one version work with players like Kaffeine and MPlayer, and files created with other versions don't. They just play the audio. But I haven't figured out any more than...

I'm a nub, no joke.

That strikes me as quite odd, since I have a 20GB drive in my machine. So clearly it will make smaller partitions. I just haven't tried it since my drive is smaller than 35GB. As for changing back to NTFS, you could...if you want to install Windows again. But Linux won't run from such a partition. And if the drive utility won't do it, you certainly can via a console with fdisk, then mkfs to make the file system you want. Best of luck. And you're welcome.

RE: How to lock icons in place?

I'm thinking this could be a bug. I have a similar problem with external USB storage devices, as well as my DVD ROM. When mount the drives or insert a disc, most of the time they seem to appear in the order that they're mounted. But pretty regularly, one or more will show up in a completely different place other than the column on the left. Sometimes it leaves me wondering where the hell they are. So to verify that they actually mount, I usually open my home folder so I can see the desktop in a ...

RE: taskbar icons

I believe it's possible to display the icons for running applications in the Kicker with the icon, the text, or both. I'm at work, though, so I don't have access to my machine to tell you exactly how to do it, but I'm pretty sure it's in the Kicker properties sheet. And if you can say 'you're English sucks', your English doesn't suck
