For all beginners -just like i am- i would recommend using not only KDE but also KDE 3.5. Gnome was totally out of question, KDE 4.2 is not as bad but from point of experienced windows user who has all keyabord shortcuts in their muscle memory, KDE 3 and its keyboard shortcut schemes are mandatory. There is no way that i could start using system where i need to learn all shotcuts from beginning and even if my mind would learn those, my nerves doesnt...
