Sorry, I wasn't really sure where else to put this: I was thinking, it would be great if individual virtual desktops could be locked, such that a password is required to switch to that specific virtual desktop or switch to any apps running on that virtual desktop. Would a turing test on each post solve it? Or maybe a limit on posts per user in a certain period of time, eg no more than 1 post in the space of two minutes - realistically to type a post worth reading it'll take at least that, so no harm done to genuine posters. I don't know why they (the spammers) bother sometimes - really, who bothers to read this stuff?

Since I posted this thread ... I have discovered how to change the default back to Konqueror (systemsettings > advanced > file associations > inode > directory, for anyone who is interested) so now I am happy about that. I have started to become used to the idea of not having a file manager desktop, though it still lacks a certain something, if I think what it is, I will be sure to post. I use my keyboard to navigate a lot of the time, and I've noticed that the new style 'k' menu doesn't seem to have a shortcut. It used to be Alt+F1 for the old one, but neither that nor the 'start' button on the keyboard seems to work any more. This would be quite useful, as I don't like using the mouse if I can avoid it.

In quick reply to DJRUMPY and batavia: I highly recommend LinuxQuestions.org - there's help for most things. I would also recommend learning a bit about the terminal, even just at a basic level, it really gives you an insight into what's going on when you click on something. Even when you go back to windows. Once you're used to it, you'll find it far easier to do things than you would with a GUI. I have just tried the version of KDE4 that can be installed through Kubuntu 8.04 (It says it's 3.3, but that seems a bit odd). Anyway, I have the following to say about it, for anyone who is interested: I like the new 'Plasma' applets, especially the way that you can put them on the desktop - I have a nice big clock in the middle of my screen, a bit like (but much better than ) Windows Vista's little clock thing.
