Thanks! KOffice shouldn't have to maintain MS compatibility anyway... After all, it's Linux, not Windows. (MS compatibility is OOO's big thing, since it's multi-platform.)
(I'm using 3.4.3.) Thanks very much for the info! I can't try it right now---I have a new system and am still running from a live CD---but I will try it as soon as I've reinstalled. Cheers, Ander
You're right, my profile name did contain a quote: A's profile (Well, actually an apostrophe, but that's like a single quote.) Okay, assuming I fix that, I can include the profile name in a command to run Konqueror. But is that the only way to have K. remember the view you want? How about adding a way to make it the default profile in the "manage profiles" list? That would be useful. (And I must say, I still don't really understand why Konqueror seems to ignore the view mode specified in the con...
Excellent---thanks, Bram!
Hey, thanks. What a talented guy. I'll have to drop him some fan mail.
Yeah, it's probably just as well... Now that I've used Linux this much longer, I've really come to appreciate the wisdom of running things as root only when you have to. (Maybe justxaxgothxx feels the same way by now, too.)
Bram85: You're exactly right. KWrite is much simpler (with settings even I can understand!). It's my fault for not looking more closely at KWrite when I started using Linux. I just assumed it had more features than Kate---but it's the other way around. (I guess "Kate" sounded like the simplest name!) Anyway, I'm sorry I was ranting so much. No doubt I was just feeling stressed out by so many new things to learn. Linux is fabulous, though (but you knew that). Cheers, Ander
Bram85: Wow, that is just awesome! Thank you! What a great example of the open-source spirit... And I'm sorry it took me this long to check the thread again. That's what happens when you fall behind in email. Anyway, thanks again---very cool! Cheers, Ander
I've tried it; it doesn't make any difference. Whenever I indent the first line of an existing paragraph, or start a new paragraph with one or more spaces, Kate indents the whole paragraph with rows of distracting black X's. (Ick---what were the devs thinking?) The KDE Handbook says: Quoted Using automatic indenting Kate's editor component supports a variation of autoindenting modes, designed for different text formats. You can pick from the available modes using the Tools->Indentation menu... T...
Can I make Kate start with the Filesystem Browser and Documents list hidden? I think it used to start that way, but I can't restore it. I've played with the Sessions settings (including "Save Window Configuration"), but no luck. And to show you I'm not lazy, I've checked: /home/[user_name]/.kde/share/config/ ...but I didn't a setting like that. (Did I miss it?) Thanks.
I know that several people have asked about this, so I'm sorry to ask again---but nothing I've found seems to work. Konqueror always opens in Icon view. I'd like it to open in MultiColumn view. I've saved a View Profile with MultiColumn; it's at the top of my View Profile list. Someone suggested that this would make Konqueror use it as the default, but it doesn't. I'd rather not have to select a profile for each Konqueror window I open. I've checked these config files: /home/[username]/.kde/shar...
I seem to remember reading about a command where you could type the root p/w once & the system securely encrypted & remembered it for the rest of the current session. Can't remember it offhand, tho.
Thanks for checking. I just love this artwork---I've never seen a tile pattern like it.
Is there a way to change the icon used by a symbolic link to an executable? The gear icon is nice, but I have links to several apps on my desktop and I'd like to make them a bit more program-specific. Thanks!
I realize KDE doesn't include it. I wondered if perhaps someone (that is, a 3rd party) had written something like it. Might not be a bad idea! At the very least, it'd be helpful if Kmenuedit had a Find command which would move the selection to the next menu item containing the searched-for string.
I like Kate (the editor, that is), but I can't figure out how to stop its auto-indenting. In Settings > Indentation, I've turned off everything I could: Indentation mode: None Indentation with Spaces: Use spaces instead of tabs to indent; Number of spaces: 0 Keep indent profile? No Keep extra spaces? No And yet, whenever I indent a paragraph with a couple of spaces, Kate moves the whole paragraph over. What am I missing? Thanks.
Hi, My wife and I use different keyboard layouts (she uses U.S.; I use the speedier Dvorak). Unfortunately, when she tries to log on after one of my sessions, the key layout stays as Dvorak, even though she's clicked her user name in the logon window. Wouldn't it make more sense for KDE to check (and switch to, if necessary) the selected user's key layout---so they can, you know, type their password? And meanwhile, is there a workaround for this (config file, etc.)? Thanks, ander
Hi, I'm unable to open a simple Excel 2003 spreadsheet in KSpread 3.5.1. I see: Could not open /media/sda1/AudioCDs.xls Reason: This document has no sheets (tables). I've tried saving it as an Excel v4, 3, and 2 document, but no luck. Here's the file, in case anyone would like to try. Suggestions?
