Alternate method of attacking the problem. I tried doing a complete uninstallation using synaptic, but it retained all my settings. I'm thinking there's some config file sitting somewhere that refuses to be wiped, any idea where that might be?

Thanks for the response, but unfortunately the background colour remains exactly the same. It doesn't change with any colour in the standard appearence dialogoues in the control centre or any other settings I can find, be it in kopete or konqueror (which did have the same background colour, but then I changed it, and the kopete textbox colour remained the same)..

Where does kopete find the colour it uses for the background for the input/typing/text box during conversations? I cannot find any way to change it, and it is stuck on a very dark colour, which is not helpful (the background colour bucket is also greyed out, if that's important)..
