have you tried $ cdrecord -scanbus to locate your burner. This will give you info on your buner that will be helpful in the config of its use. Have you used the command line version of burning cd's before going to a GUI mkisofs cdrecord

what version of kde did you pull down with emerge and did you use emerge -p kde or emerge -Dp kde find out what you are missing for your kde-3.x.x if you want use emerge -UDf kde that will look for updates and download all your packages first then you can have them all in the portage tree when you decide to emerge kde.

It sounds like you probably didn't move your old modules directory before installing your newly compiled modules. try this move /lib/modules/2.4.22 to something like /lib/modules/2.4.22.old and go back to your kernel source tree and do 'make modules_install' again. This should clear up that problem.
I am running gentoo. so let me see if i can help 1 what video card are you using. and monitor . 2. can you tell me what your /var/log/XFree86.0.log kicks out or even the screen after you startx crashed. 3. /etc/rc.conf file says. Then i might be able to help ya on your problem. also. what stage of install gentoo did you do? i recommed a stage 3 install, unless you want to start from scratch.

try pon it is a command line dialup . It is a good dialup program to have if you happen to run into problems like this. it will help you get on line.
