Default CD Player = xmms?

I am still learning how to configure KDE so this might be the simplest thing in the world: I want xmms to be the default cd-player for my client. How can I make it so that when an user clicks on the "PLAY" option of the "Audio CD" icon in the "storage media" applet - they get xmms instead of the "PLAY" application that seems to be the default?

problems with signing in to MSN

There is only one way to make Kopete refuse the "NEXT" button when you create a new ICQ account entry (I think). That happens only when you enter an incorrect ICQ account name. So, you must enter a valid ICQ account number BEFORE you press the "NEXT" button or it will simply ignore you. Your ICQ account number will be at LEAST four characters long - more likely it is 8 or 9 characters. It will contain NO letters - only numbers. My ICQ account is 13813347. This could explain why you cannot comple...

kde sound system not working (i have sound, and it does work)

You know, in defense of aRts, I have yet to find a "bug". Every problem that I have had was a result of my not understanding something - and a severe lack of documentation (endemic in our Linux world). But overall, the performance and utility of aRts has not let me down. My KDE system is 100% aRts - and it is flawless. I run Skype while XMMS handles my music and my system notify sounds are working all at the same time. Not too bad :-)

RE: my sound volume is 100%, and i cannot compile

No, I don't know anything about Slackware. I use Gentoo and it is the only distro I have ever used long enough to get confortable. It looks like your problem is in the compile of akode... and akode is the program that controls your sound in KDE as well. Can you rebuild akode by itself? It is unlikely that you should need to rebuild KDE. And you should NOT try to upgrade if you have a system that is not yet stable.

RE: xmms can play ogg file

Sure. I found this too - he is talking about a fix involving the startkde config file, but the answer is the volume setting: Quoted I upgraded to KDE 3.4 last night. As expected the sound didn't work so I not only added the above lines to "startkde" but I compiled and reinstalled arts-1.4.0 from the .src files. The sounds still didn't work until I found that the player volume (Control Center --> Sound & Multimedia --> System Notifications --> Player Settings) has to be set to 100. Anything less ...

RE: .wav works. :) but how to fix the ogg support?

Hey, that's great! Now we are sure that KNotify is working and aRts is working too! Can you play your .ogg files in xmms?

RE: nope. sorry...

"re-installing" is really only a Micro$oft solution. I have never found that it helps in Linux. You can try putting a .wav file into the "minimize" event... see if it makes a difference. Good idea! Let me know how it goes.

Ah, but we must be getting close.

OK. Let's look at your notification sounds. We will switch you back to your default sounds and then turn all sounds on again. I have found that restarting makes a difference after this. Open Control Panel -> Sound & Multimedia -> System NotificationsClick on the "Defaults" button at the bottom of the screenTell the warning Dialog "reset" and then press "Apply" Now you have no sounds or notifications. Right? Select "The KDE Window Manager" for the Event SourceClick on the "A Window is Minimized" ...

RE: i am here, and i wish to solve it.

Well that all looks good. Your old knotifyrc had a pretty funny entry in the "Last Configured App" didn't it? Just to make sure that all is well in the land of KDE, you should close your current KDE Session. You don't have to reboot (this isn't Micro$oft), or even end X, but get out of KDE. The log in again. ------------------- OK.. two more things to check out: 1. aRts Control Tool Open the "Sound Server Control (ARts Control Tool)" application from your Multimedia menu. Keep an eye on it while...

RE: thank you, but no go...

Now you're just talkin crazy! Of course we can fix it. If you are interested in pursuing the problem. It's not tough to live without system notifications - so if you are happy with that solution then I won't spend any more time here. But if you want to look into it, we can fix it. Two places to start: First thing... if you're still with me here.. could you post the contents of this file : Source code 1 # cat ~/.kde/share/config/knotifyrc Second.... do you have permissions? Let's have a look at w...

RE: kde sound system not working (i have sound, and it does work)

OK.. as always - immediately after posting a snotty message - I find the answer. (Hey, it is my troubleshooting system and it works. :-) ) There is another post in this forum that advised to simply delete the file knotifyrc file. Source code 1 # mv ~/.kde/share/config/knotifyrc ~/.kde/share/config/knotifyrc.bak I did the copy, logged my user out of KDE and then logged back in to a system with sound. (no need to restart X, it's a KDE init file) So there ya go. Lemme know it that works for you.

RE: kde sound system not working (i have sound, and it does work)

Yes... you and me and probably every other KDE user on the planet (from what I can tell in the forums). I have read many dum ideas on how to fix this - none of which actually work. Currently I have five machines ALL in the same state. Everything is perfect on all of the systems except that there is no desktop noise. Grrrr.. The problem existed on two others last week and the worst thing happened... I rebooted them one day and the desktop sound was working. I HATE THAT!!!! Now I have no idea what...

KMail - Links in email cause Konqueror to hang.[RESOLVED]

Got it. Created a new user on the same machine. New user had no problem opening links from other apps. So the problem is in my config for MY user. I STILL don't know where everything is in KDE. I believe that this is my only complaint about KDE - I cannot intuit where settings are made. Anywho... under Settings->KDE Components->Component Chooser, I checked out the "Web Browser" listitem. Once I saw it, I recalled that long ago I was using FireFox as my default browser but had changed it back to ...

KMail - Links in email cause Konqueror to hang.[RESOLVED]

Very odd then. I am using KDE 3.4.1 on Gentoo 2.6-r12. This is really the only problem I am experiencing and it's making me nuts. I have, however confirmed that it is not a problem with the softare, it's something in my configuration. I have 4 machines running in my office, all identically installed, and only this one is displaying this behaviour. Grrrrr....

KMail - Links in email cause Konqueror to hang.[RESOLVED]

I don't think I have anything unusual setup for my browser. Konqueror is my default browser. It turns out that this is not just KMail - all programs that fire up my browser cause the same glitch. When I check my associations, I check under "text" for "html" and this is what is there: Source code 1 kfmclient openURL %u text/html Is this the same as everyone else has for Konqueror?

Kmail word wrap

Right. Currently we have a choice of emails that look like a single line as you compose, or emails that are truncated on EVERY line at 78 characters (or whatever you have set). The first option creates the right email - but it is tough to create originally. The second option is easier to create originaly - bit it creates the wrong final copy. What the world is used to is the option to have dynamic word wrapping. It is a standard in any HTML-based editor. In effect, KMail has forced a <br> after ...

problems with signing in to MSN

Well you MIGHT be typing your password into your word processor (grin). But I bet that isn't the problem. Have you tried connecting with any other Messenger Apps? Have you ever succesfully connected to the MSN Messenger? Can you send EMAIL allright using your MSN account? I just now setup Kopete to use my MSN Messenger account (I had been accessing MSN via my Jabber account using PSI until now) and it went without a hitch. In fact, I am not going to use PSI any more... Kopete is slicker. Thanks!
