Digital photo version control

Hello!

What is the ideal way to manage digital photos? I would say that one very essential feature is to be able to edit photos for your digital albums, while keeping a backup of the originals -- without duplicating the photos that you don't edit.

One of the greatest hassles that my parents are experiencing on their windows box is managing digital photos. The essential feature that could motivate them to switch to linux might well be digital photo management. They should be able to move photos around, sort them into albums and edit them and the computer should keep track of which pictures are different versions of the same photo (and protect the originals).

This should be transparent to the user; you should never have to explicitly select "Save as..." or "Create a copy...." in order not to overwrite the originals. And when viewing an album or a slide show only the "preferred" (usually latest) version of a picture should be displayed.

I have not thought out all the use cases, so the above is still a bit imprecise. I am posting this in the hope that others will contribute thoughts on what features such a system should have. As for the implementation, it would be nice if it was built into KDE rather than a separate app; perhaps a wrapping kioslave like:
