[Kopete] Kopete and SuSE 9.0

Hi,

I recently moved to Linux from Windows, and have been trying to understand how Linux works. I installed SuSE 9.0, and am having problems with the instant messenger programme Kopete.

Using it for the first time, I set up my Yahoo and MSN accounts. kopete then did not/could not connect to the servers, and from then on it has not been working.

Although the programme is stil there, shows up on the menu, whenever I click on the menu icon ot get it running, nothing ever happens. Could anyone please help?

Would be thankful if you could let me know whether I have made something wrong. I am also using the university LAN to connect to the internet....could there be some conflict with the firewall or sonething?

Thanks a lot, and have a nice day

Hi,

Are you still having problems?

What version of Kopete are you running? Are you using the one that came with SuSE 9.0? If so, it's most likely outdated. In order to try and get it to at least run when you click on the icon, you may have to delete your kopeterc file...(that seems to solve many Kopete problems). To do this, go to /home/YOURLOGINNAME/.kde/share/config/ and delete the file kopeterc. Then try to run Kopete again. At the very least you can find what version you're running at that point.

Note: In SuSE, the .../.kde/share/config part of that path I gave above is hidden. If you use Konqueror as your file browser, it'll be hidden and you'll have to show hidden files.

If you haven't upgraded Kopete since installing SuSE, I highly recommend it, otherwise you most likely won't be able to connect to MSN or Yahoo because of protocol changes that MSN and Yahoo made since the most recent SuSE release of Kopete.

Deleting the kopeterc sure helped me, thanks!

Hehe I used to use Y! but then realized that (a) no one else used it and (b) they're continually changing their protocols and I don't feel like keeping up with it!

good luck!
