Suse 9.0 login

Hi, im new but i wouldnt if you could help me. Ive isntalled SUSE 9.0 and it seem to have got it running fine only to discover i can only log on as root :? The initial install goes fine (ive tried clean reinstalls several times) but when i come back to log in as a user the screen just goes black and then im back to the login screen (a wrong password entered will produce the "log in failed" mesage though)
Any advice would be appreciated. I found a few posts on the internet pointing towards it being somethign to do with KDE but with no resolution. Could anyone please help with a link or new user friendly instructions ?

Hi,

The black screen and then return to the login prompt I have seen before and it was caused by not having space left on the users home directory or in /tmp.

I suggest you have a look at your /home/userID and see if you have sufficient space.
Log on as root go to a command line and type in “df –h” and see what space is available. You can also as root go to /home/userID and as it is a new installation there is nothing in there of any importance try deleting it’s contents and then try to log in again

You can also try to create a new user2 and try to login with the new user2 you use created.

To add a new user:

useradd -d /home/newuser –G users –m –p [password] –s

Then logout as root and try login in with the new user.

i figured out what was going wrong, and it was nothign to do wth KDE , it was bad installations of yahoo messenger. :oops:
yahoo messenger even works fine from redhat 9.0rpms as well just dont leave the box ticked for ymessenger starting with xwindows and adding to the xinitrc file and theres no problems. Well it works fine for me now at least
