kde4 and Debian

To my suprise, Debian speaks of kde4, while kde3 is the current version :)

According to the faq of Debian, this is the reason:

[code:1]
1.4 Why is there a kdelibs4 package? I thought KDE was at version 3.

The kdelibs3 packages are for KDE 2.2.2. Debian appends the API version number to library package names, so several versions of the library can be installed at the same time. (Think libpng2 and libpng3.) The API version for KDE 2.x is 3 and the version for 3.x is 4.
[/code:1]
But why did Debian rename kde 2.2.2 to kde3?????
Is kde 2.2.2 incompatible with kde 2.2.1 or earlier??
