Help I am Missing /dev/dsp files and it wont play any sound

I am very new to Linux but like a challange so I am currently running Slackware 9 on my system and am having problomes with my sound, there is none. every time I start KDE it gives me a message that says that it can not open /dev/dsp because it is not there, am I missing some distribution files from Slackware or did I not run a config properly? Any help would be greatly apperciated
