UT 2003

Has anybody tried to get the demo version of UT 2003 to run on linux? I have on two diffrent boxes and had no luck with either. The full version is supposed to ship with full linux support and I think that is great. Game developers finally trying to include linux in the full out of the box. I would like to support the company by buying the product but if I can't even get the demo to work then I don't want to pay $40 USD just to find that I need to boot into windows! Any feedback?

My problem is

After I install it, I try to run it and the splash screen pops up for a second, then disappears and that is all I've seen. There are no error messages or anything like that. I've check 'ps' to see if it is still running and there is no trace of UT. Anybody had any problems like these?

Sys Specs: Suse 8.0 Pro
AMD 1.4 GHz
512 MB RAM
GeForce 2 64 MB Video Card

Thanks,

Its because glx is not installed properly.

if you open terminal, and run ./ut2003_demo, you will get a log regarding your problem most likely GLX extension is missing

Pleeeease: If you have an error message: POST IT. Perhaps someone can see the error immediately, but without an error message one can often just guess.

Download either the correct RPM for your system or the source code file. In case of XFree 4.0.1 you will require the source code file by all means, since NVIDIA doesn't supply a RPM for the XFree 4.0.1 driver. The procedure is super easy with the source code file, so there's no reason not to use it. After the download unpack the file in a directory of your choice.

Before you 'make' the driver you need to check a few things. You need to remove or rename several of the possibly installed Mesa files that interfere with NVIDIA's OpenGL driver:

/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libGLcore.a
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.a
/usr/lib/libGL.so
/usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.*
/usr/X11R6/lib/libGLcore.so.*

After you've done that type 'make' and almost all things should be taken care of. In my case there was one problem with the file '/usr/lib/libGL.so.1', being a symbolic link to a Mesa file, although I had renamed it earlier. Best you change the symbolic link to the newly installed NVIDIA OpenGL driver file '/usr/lib/libGL.so.1.0.4' and you should be set.

If you can find any 'libMesaGL.so.*' or 'libMesa.so.*' files in 'usr/lib' or 'usr/X11R6/lib' make symbolic links out of them, pointing to the NVIDIA OpenGL driver file '/usr/lib/libGL.so.1.0.4'.

Finally, you want to modify '/etc/X11/XF86Config' . Replace the line 'Driver "nv"' in the 'Section "Device"' to 'Driver "nvidia"'. If it's not already in there, please add 'Load "glx"' in the 'Section "Module"', to enable 3D!

where can i find these?

Look around at nvidia.com for the linux drivers they are there....

BTW, it runs pretty good once you get that taken care of, very happy with the demo, now to buy the full version.

The only computer I have with a decent gfx card is a laptop with a Radeon. :(

I went on the website: www.nvidia.com, but I can only see 2 different versions of drivers :( ... ans so I don't know which one I must choose :( ... (I don't want to make a bad mistake). My graphic card is a GeForce 3 64Mb from Asus.
Which one do you think I should take to be able to play games like UT2003 under Linux Mandrake 9.0???
Thanks a lot for your help :D.

Hi, I have tried the demo and then purchased the full version of it. It works as a dream.

Using the following Hardware/Software:

SMP 2.3Mhz AMD
Nvidia GForce4 Ti4600 128MB
4GB RAM
Suse8.1
KDE3.1

I've got my Nvidia Drivers from:

http://frankie.0c3.net/nVidiaDrivers/Linux/XFree86_40/1.0-3123/

rpm -Uvh filename.rpm --> Kernel first then GLX

Let me know if it works now!
