Redhat KDE looks just plain bad

Is there a way to get KDE to look like it does on Suse or Mandrake? Please don't say I need to rebuild it from scratch...PLEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAASE

what do you mean "make it look like mandrake or suse"

all kde on RH is the same as KDE on mdk etc, depends on your configurations.

My suggestion:
head over to www.kdelook.org
and get some new window decos and styles. i recommend Knifty and Plastik, you can also get my xmms skin from there which will complement it.

the go to www.linuxcult.org, register (if not already) and download everaldo's crystal icon set v9.0.

Now you can make your desktop pretty :)
heres what my desktop looks like.

I mean the kinky little KDE logo on the side of the K menu and the hide buttons on the taskbar and all those added little features that Redhat doesn't have. There's a whole general appearance to just the kicker alone that's drastically different in other builds versus Redhat.

I did do the KDE-look thing, do quite often, and I'm a Noia man :D

Hate to say it, but...

I believe you'd have to build from scratch...

No, seriously, some of those options are in the KDE Control Center. Like the little gear thing on the side of the Kmenu. It's at Control Center->Desktop->Panels->Menus tab. Check the box that's labeled "Show Side Image" in the KMenu section of the tab. You just have to play with different window decorations, color schemes, and styles. You also have to go all the way through the Control Center to turn on all the nice things like translucent menus, menu shadows, etc. Even my SuSE 8.2 installation didn't have all the cool things turned on. I had to customize it to my liking.

BTW, I think NOIA is pretty slick too. However, since SuSE designs all their stuff around the Crystal stuff, I stuck with it for the sake of consistency.

Red Hat is notorious for having a preference for that butt-ugly Gnome.

Oooh la la ~ Call me corny but I like that K menu image.

I dig the whole Mandrake K menu layout, I'll toy with that one manually.

Thanks alot guys

Get it all straightened out?

Did you get KDE straightened out like you want it? Was it just the options you had to select and the styles/icons/window decorations, or did you have to build from scratch, like you thought you might?

Plenty of hunting around the KControl helped turn on a lot of sexy little things that make it look nicer like the Mandrake defaults. I'm still trying to figure out how to get rid of the frames that are inside the kicker, the boxes surrounding the tastkbar, pager, sys tray, clock, etc. I'm using Plastik so it'll look really sexy if I can drop that.

Hmmmm...

You've got me there... I think it would look nicer, too, but I think you'd have to hack a file somewhere or something to get rid of those. Maybe I'll look around and see what I can find and get back with you on it.

In Redhat it isn't look and feel, it's Appearance I believe (Sorry, I'm not using Redhat at the moment). It's towards the top. Appearance and Themes I believe.

Do you know where the Kmenu stuff is located for Mandrake? I'd like to turn on the crazy little gear thing on the side of the Kmenu but mandrake doesn't follow that menu system. I've looked everywhere in the KDE control center.

Thanks

What version of Mandrake are you using? I used 9.1 and the gear popped up by default...

It's a pretty sexy gear isn't it? Yeah...gotta dig the gear...

You should be able to find the option by right clicking the taskbar and configuring the panel. Hunt around, it's a check box, and it's there. You've probably looked at it 50 million times and never realized it. Show Side Image I believe? Just click stuff that applies to images and see what happens. Blind experimentation is the only way to learn...

I'm running the RC2 of Mandrake 9.2. I've tried the right click on the menu but can't find anything there. Oh well. It's really no big deal. Maybe a bug in the Release candidate.

Well scratch that last one. Sure enough... it was there. A little check box.

Thanks

Control Panel differences?

Glad you found it! Isn't the KDE Control Panel the same in all distros? I thought it was distro independent.
