Kopete 0.9.0 with strange Language Support problem

Im using Kopete 0.9.0 with SusE 9.1 and KDE 3.2.
And this is my problem:
When i chat with my friends and they send me the letters "Å Ä and Ö"
(the swedish letters with a, a and o with dots on :) )
I cant see them most of the time, but sometimes (from the same users) it works, especially if they write them standalone, but most often when they write them in a phrase, It just shows up as a square or some strange symbol.
But as i said...from 90 % of my friends it works, the ones that doesnt work often send from ICQ...if that has something to do with this?
These letters work on my keyboard and in my system outside kopete.
