[kopete] setting default outgoing font

I'm trying to have Kopete automatically use a specific outgoing font for my chat sessions (the font other users see). Typically, I have to use the drop-down menu in the chat window and change it every time (I get complaints of ugly fonts. Dunno what MS uses, not having Sans).

I've tried changing my font in the KDE Control Center, which does make it show that the font I want is selected in drop-down selection, but the users say they see the ugly font again, and re-selecting it doesn't work. So I just end up having to switch to a different Windows font. I've changed the font in the Kopete options, but it seems to only change the fonts *I* see in the chat windows.

Is there any way I can have it automatically choose the font I want for chats, that the others see? maybe something I need to configure?

I'm using Mandrake 10.0 Official, KDE 3.2.3, Kopete 0.9.0, and the font I'm trying to use is Verdana (which I imported from my Windows installation using drakfont).

Any help would be much appreciated.
