Kmail Deletes Messages on Server - Won't Open

We have Kmail in KDE 3.1.4 which came with SuSe 9.0. Despite setting it not to remove messages from the mail server, it did. We verified the settings numerous times, but could not correct the problem. The program was worthless with that deficiency, so we quit using Kmail. Alas, by accident it was used to send an email. That message was "held" and reported that there was an error in the email address of one of the recipients. There was no error. Worse, the message was not sent to any of the other recipients. While trying to correct that problem, Kmail downloaded several other messages from the server, and deleted them from our mail server. We tried to forward them back to us, but Kmail kept giving us the "address error" for the original email, and did not forward any of the messages it downloaded. Now we can not even open Kmail. That may be a blessing, as the program is a positive menace! However, we still need to retrieve those emails. Any ideas on how to accomplish that? Once done, how do we delete Kmail and prevent it from ever having the chance to do more damage? And to SuSe, we can't express here in appropriate language what we think of your including this time bomb on your distribution. javascript:emoticon(':x') However, you can expect we will remember it when deciding what, if any, Linux distribution to use for our offices!!!
