Konqueror

Hello,

I use Konqueror because it has a harmonic balance of speed, features, functionality and configurability. A few days ago, I was provided a link that contained some information I was particulary interested in. Unfortunately, it was a link to German website and I can neither speak nor read German.

I remembered Konqueror provides a translation tool via bablefish. I promptly activated the tool and voila the whole website was translated from German to English. The translation quality wasn't flawless, but it graciously served its purpose. "Little wonder Konqueror has always been my favorite", I said to myself, of course with a big grin on my face. :D

Konqueror may not be the lightning fast web browser, or have the perfect rendering engine. But is has constantly and steadily been improving both in stability and in speed. Its design is rock solid and its features (web page translation, web page archiver, browser identificator, to mention a few) and functionality ( integrates with konsole, mplayer, kmplayer, supports all web plugins like flash, java, shockwave, quicktime, all media formats and so on) are almost unmatched among the browsers I have used and tested.

For these reasons, konqueror creates an equilibrium, balance and a judicious compromise. And for these reasons, konqueror has emerged victorious as my choice among web clients. I look forward to the safari enhancements in the future versions of Konqueror, and an enjoyable and personalized surfing voyage via Konqueror. :)

P.S. I only wish it wasn't both a file manager and a browser. I imagine it will be more lightweight and a little faster as a stand alone browser.

I'm use Mozilla Firebird. Mozilla is great software, and Firebird is better than it's predescessors becasue it's more lightweight. It's fast, standards compliant, and doesn't crash as much as IE. :) Plus it has awesome themes and extensions (mouse gestures are fun).

I use Firebird on my NT machine at work, it's lean and works well. On my Linux machine at home I use Konqueror almost exclusively. Konqueror was much improved with the 3.1.x release. Prior to then I had issues with some web sites, my bank for instance.

I believe almost any browser is superior to IE, and I really get ticked off (toned down) when I get messages telling me to upgrade my browser. For the life of me I cannot figure out why anyone would design a web site that way. :?

Two of the best features of other browsers are tabbed browsing and pop-up blocking. If I do start IE for those garbage web sites, I cannot believe the pop-up windows that start flying all over the desktop. How easy it is to forget when you use better browsers :P

Hi,
I use Konqueor for my daily browsing, and Opera for sites that don't render/work correctly in Konqueorr (like my online banking...).

I prefer Konqueror because of its perfect integration with the rest of the desktop, the transparent way it handles things, the nice font rendering, and it's speed.

I prefer Mozilla for the web because the tabbed browsing in Konqueror doesn't seem intuitive for me. Can the controls be remapped? For example, it would be nice if i could open links in new tab by middle clicking them like in Mozilla.

That's the way it works here.
You can configure it that way:
Settings
-> Configure konqueror
-> Behavior
-> Checkbox "Open links in new tab instead of new window"

In that menu you can also choose if new tabs
are activated or opened in the background.

The one thing Konqui needs to be perfect is Find As You Type, which makes keyboarding a snap, especially in forums like this one. :o

If you are referring to text completion, it already has it.

Steps:

1). Right click anywhere within the location bar
2). Go to Text completion
3). Click on it
4). Select which type of text completion suits you (manual, automatic, drop down list, etc)

Have fun

No, I don't mean location bar completion, I'm referring to what Mozilla calls Find As You Type, or used to call Type Ahead Find; in other words you type the first letter or two of a link and it gets highlighted, then <Enter> takes you there. (It also works for regular text in a page through pressing a switch key). It really makes all the difference in speed and efficiency in surfing from the keyboard.

Oh, forgive my confusion. Now I understand. I don't think Konqueror has that yet. Yes, I'm a keyboard freak my self. I prefer using the keyboard over the mouse.

It's sometimes more efficient. Unfortunately, most developers design their apps assuming everyone owns or uses the mouse exclusively.

You could set up a bugzilla account and report it as a bug under wishlist. Good Luck.

Please don't, but vote for the already existing bug instead:

Cheers,

BTW: I like the way emacs handles incremental search:
You press a key-combination (Ctrl-S in emacs' case)
and then type the search term letter by letter.
It highlights the current match but also marks all the
other matches in the current window. If you hit the
key combination again it jumps to the next match.
This is not restricted to links of course, but works with any text,
and that's the kind of search I would like to see
in konqi, too.

I always use Konqueror as my browser.
Even beeing a file manger and web browser it is faster/lighter than Mozilla.
More I love the Konqueor abbility to seach in google as well as the diferent protocol handled.
For what I'v seen in Safari I am really lookin forward Konqueror on KDE 3.2.

Of couse for those who use KDE konqueor integrates with the desktop environment so...

Yeah, but Mozilla Firebird, especially with the appropriate extensions, yields fine grain control. You can stipulate by type of link (eg bookmark, history, address bar, etc), and what to do with it (eg new window/tab, new active tab, etc).

I used to use IE, but then a friend introduced me to Firebird. While it does have its quirks, it has quickly become my primary browser. And with time, may become my only browser.

I doubt that it would be faster. KHTML is probably much more slower than what you lose in using a KPart.

Konqueror itself is only an empty box. Inside you use the KParts, be the file manager's, KHTML for HTML or XML, KView for pictures, KGhostView for PS and so on...

Have a nice day!

Hi,
I've been using both Mozilla (not Firebird) and Konqueror though and ADSL connection and RH9.0 for about 12 months. Recently I added a Laptop running WinXP (please forgive me, it was to keep a customer happy).

I was getting really poor web browser performance (with K and M) on the ADSL and swapped to cable, touble is the Linux browsers performance hardly improved but IE flies.

I find this extremely disconcerting - can one tune Konqueror to improve its renering speed? It verges on woeful at present. My preference is to work on Linux (using KDE) but I would have hoped that an open--source browser would perform at least as well as stuff from the Redmond folk.

I'll look at Firebird.
The higher you soar, the smaller you seem to those that cant.
