IMAP vs. POP
As stated in the title, which mail protocol is better? I would make this a poll, but I want to hear some detailed answers cause I want to get new e-mail account and don't know which to choose. And does anyone know of a good free service for either? I already have Hotmail and Netscape accounts and neither work with any e-mail client on Linux that I've tried. (Evolution, KMail, Mozilla Thunderbird).

I know only free POP providers, no free IMAP providers.
IMAP has the advantage that it keeps emails on the server side, which means you can access them from everywhere with any mail client you prefer.
With POP you fetch the mails and store them locally.
You can install a local IMAP server and feed it the POP fetched mails to achieve something similar.

Hi,
freemail.de offers a free pop3 and a free IMAP mail adress. Well you will get a .de adresse
but it's really great. You even get your own key which you can also export and encrypt you mails (yes you can also do it with pgp
)

PS: I have used my account with kmail both pop3 and imap and had no problems.
Cool. I've always wanted to try GPG/PGP also. And I don't mind a .de domain. I think it's cool.

The only fuck..g think of freemail.de is that there only give acces all 15 min. When you are in dialog and want to check your mails I have to login into the web frontend. The IMAP service worked for me very slow ...

Hey Kenneth you can also use fsmail it's a freeimal service in UK. The Address is:

and I use pop3
pop.freeserve.net
smtp.freeserve.net

GPG is a matter of the mail client.

Perhaps the easiest solution is to use Yahoo with the SourceForge project YahooPOPs. I've been using it with Mozilla Thunderbird for quite some time and find it fairly useful.
